\n President Trump on Friday urged Congress to app<\/a>rove stimulus checks to Americans by redirecting $300 billion in unused coronavirus pandemic relief funds.<\/p>\n

Trump said at a White House press briefing that he considered redirecting the funds unilaterally, but prefers for Congress to approve the idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have $300 billion ready to go, all Congress has to do is say, \u2018Use it.\u2019 I\u2019d like to use it without their permission but I guess I\u2019m not allowed,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re<\/span> willing<\/span> to<\/span> spend it,<\/span> I\u2019d<\/span> like<\/span> to<\/span> get<\/span> approval<\/span> from<\/span> Congress.<\/span> There\u2019s<\/span> a<\/span> theory<\/span> that<\/span> I<\/span> don\u2019t<\/span> have<\/span> to<\/span> do<\/span> that,<\/span> but<\/span> I\u2019d<\/span> rather<\/span> be<\/span> up<\/span> front<\/span> and<\/span> I\u2019d<\/span> like<\/span> to<\/span> get<\/span> approval<\/span> from<\/span> Congress.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump called on Democrats in Congress to issue a \u201cone sentence approval\u201d for him to redirect the funds.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) did not immedia<\/a>tely respond to a request for comment from The Post.<\/p>\n

Trump did not identify the exact funding source, but apparently was referring to unused business loan money approved in March in the $2 trillion CARES Act.<\/p>\n

Trump floated the idea amid gridlock on new COVID-19 relief legislation that would send another round of $1,200\u00a0stimulus<\/span>\u00a0checks\u00a0to most Americans.<\/p>\n

Both sides agree on more\u00a0stimulus<\/span> checks, but they disagree strongly on how much money state and local governments should receive.<\/p>\n

Democrats and Republicans also disagree on how large a federal unemployment insurance supplement should be \u2014 leaving workers with nothing, though Trump last month signed an executive order\u00a0allowing a $400 weekly boost\u00a0if states chip in $100.<\/p>\n

Republican leaders want to peg unemployment checks to 70 percent of pre-pandemic pay, but Democrats want to revive an expired $600-a-week boost that in some cases resulted in workers earning more than they did before COVID-19 left them jobless.<\/p>\n

Other Trump executive orders last month resurrected a federal ban on evictions during the pandemic, proposed a temporary payroll tax cut and extended deferral of college loan payments.<\/p>\n

New government job data released Friday showed the US economy added 1.4 million jobs last month in the latest sign that the nation\u2019s recovery from the pandemic.<\/p>\n

The jobless rate\u00a0fell to 8.4 percent\u00a0in August, down from 10.2 percent in July.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
