{"id":608148,"date":"2024-02-11T03:15:31","date_gmt":"2024-02-11T00:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/bachelor-producers-freeze-when-asked-about-franchise-diversity-woes\/"},"modified":"2024-02-11T03:15:31","modified_gmt":"2024-02-11T00:15:31","slug":"bachelor-producers-freeze-when-asked-about-franchise-diversity-woes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/bachelor-producers-freeze-when-asked-about-franchise-diversity-woes\/","title":{"rendered":"#\u2018Bachelor\u2019 Producers Freeze When Asked About Franchise Diversity Woes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>The Bachelor <\/em>producers froze Saturday when asked at the Television Critics Association\u2019s winter press tour about why the franchise seemingly has a hard time handling racial issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    During a panel featuring showrunners from <em>Jeopardy, Dancing With the Stars <\/em>and <em>Shark Tank, <\/em>NPR\u2019s Eric Deggans polled <em>Bachelor <\/em>producing trio Jason Ehrlich, Claire Freeland (both newcomers) and franchise veteran Bennett Graebner about why former star Rachel Lindsay and Matt James were both critical about how the Warners-produced franchise talks about race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Freeland, who joined the Warner Bros. TV-produced <em>Bachelor <\/em>franchise in January 2023, attempted a response by saying that the show\u2019s goal is to \u201crepresent the country\u201d before shifting away from the question. Deggans, a respected veteran journalist and TCA member, then reiterated the question in a more direct fashion. At that point, all three producers remained mum for around 10 seconds, creating one of the more awkward moments of press tour. Deggans ended the prolonged silence by then saying, \u201cGuess we have our answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIt is impossible for me to comment on the seasons before I joined them here,\u201d Freeland told <em>The Hollywood Reporter <\/em>following the panel. \u201cI can only speak to the seasons I have made as part of the U.S. franchise as well as our plans as we go forward. And that is to get better at some of the areas that have not necessarily been as strong, perhaps, before in the past on the franchise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Freeland singled out <em>The Golden Bachelor,<\/em> which was for seniors, and Charity Lawson\u2019s season of <em>The Bachelorette<\/em> as examples of positive representation within the franchise. \u201cI think you\u2019re seeing much more representation. And that\u2019s really the goal going forward,\u201d she said. \u201cI can only speak to what I\u2019ve done here over the last year. I hope that shows what our plan is for the franchise and what we\u2019ll do as we go forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Reporters present for the panel were buzzing after the panel about the producers\u2019 failure to properly respond to a question that has plagued the franchise for at least a decade, if not more. Some took to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> to share their surprise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cNotably, two of the three producers onstage representing the <em>Bachelor<\/em> franchise are new and had no involvement with the seasons @Deggans referenced. But the third? Who literally sat there in silence, not even a \u2018no comment?\u2019 It was flabbergasting,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Memles\/status\/1756454536758391014?s=20\">wrote<\/a> cultural critic Myles McNutt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The panel was part of Disney\u2019s second day at TCA and came mere hours after Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich formally announced <em>The Golden Bachelorette<\/em>, following the breakout success of <em>The Golden Bachelor<\/em>. The executive noted earlier in the day that <em>The Golden Bachelor<\/em> reignited the franchise and brought in a slew of new viewers who previously had not engaged with the dating <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Shortly afterward, new <em>Jeopardy <\/em>showrunner Michael Davies fielded a question about the ethnicity of its hosts and contestants across its multiple iterations. \u201c<em>[Jeopardy] <\/em>has a duty to represent everyone. Talent beyond the host, the contestants, the questions. It has to represent everything that\u2019s great about this country, including diversity,\u201d he said, defending his choice to tap Ken Jennings as the lone host of the syndicated show. \u201cNo, I don\u2019t think a straight, white man is the only person who can host <em>Jeopardy<\/em>. As we expand the franchises, we will fail if that\u2019s the only person who can host.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Speaking of <em>Jeopardy, <\/em>Davies also explained the \u201cfractional ownership\u201d that existed between Jennings and Mayim Bialik, who recently announced that she had been fired from the syndicated <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> show. \u201cOver the past two and a half seasons, what we\u2019ve heard from our TV stations and other interested parties, was that they wanted more consistency. A singular host,\u201d he said. \u201cMayim is a superb host on <em>Jeopardy<\/em> and I hope to continue working with her on primetime. But Ken won the job to run the syndicated show.
