\n Madame Web<\/em> star Dakota Johnson says the film\u2019s script<\/a> underwent some \u201cdrastic changes\u201d after she signed on to the project. <\/p>\n

\n The Sony-Marvel film has been savaged by critics as one of the worst superhero movies<\/a> of the modern era.<\/p>\n

\n But Johnson \u2014 who plays a New York paramedic who develops psychic visions \u2014 says the script she originally saw was very different than what was shot and released. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThere were\u00a0drastic\u00a0<\/em>changes\u201d made to the script she told The Wrap<\/a><\/em> with a laugh. \u201cAnd I can\u2019t even tell you what they were.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n It\u2019s a revelation that suggests one of two things: The Madame Web<\/em> script \u2014 by director S.J. Clarkson along with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker \u2014 was weakened as it got closer to shooting by creatives second guessing the original work. Or, heaven help us, the superhero film was somehow greenlit by a major studio with an even worse<\/em> script than the one currently being ridiculed. <\/p>\n

\n Previously, Johnson said she worried certain aspects for the film were not \u201cgoing to be good at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019ve never really done a movie where you are on a blue screen, and there\u2019s fake explosions going off, and someone\u2019s going, \u2018Explosion!\u2019 and you act like there\u2019s an explosion,\u201d she told Entertainment Weekly<\/a><\/em>. \u201cThat to me was absolutely psychotic. I was like, \u2018I don\u2019t know if this is going to be good at all! I hope that I did an okay job!\u2019 But I trusted [Clarkson]. She works so hard, and she has not taken her eyes off this movie since we started.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Johnson\u2019s performance, at least, has largely avoided criticism, with reviewers instead focusing on the film\u2019s script, special effects and direction. <\/p>\n

\n Madame Web<\/em> currently has just a 17 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film opens today with box office tracking estimating a $25 million six-day weekend \u2014 which is about half of what the MCU bomb The Marvels<\/em> brought in for its opening haul two months ago. Madame Web<\/em> reportedly cost $80 million to produce. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
