\n Fifteen years ago,\u00a0Carey\u00a0Mulligan made her first visit to the Berlin Film Festival to support her star-making turn in the dramedy\u00a0An Education<\/em>. Lone Scherfig\u2019s film centers on Jenny (Mulligan), a teen in 1960s suburban London who falls for a smooth-talking older man played by Peter Sarsgaard. <\/p>\n

\n Scherfig (Italian for Beginners<\/em>) shared an agent with writer Nick Hornby, who penned the script<\/a> based on journalist Lynn Barber\u2019s autobiographical essay.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n The movie boasted supporting roles for Emma Thompson, Alfred Molina and Rosamund Pike but had a bumpy path and lost financing prior to production. Mulligan told\u00a0THR<\/em>\u00a0at the time that 18 months passed between her initial audition and the project getting the greenlight, leading her to take a job at a pub in the interim. <\/p>\n

\n When\u00a0An Education<\/em>\u00a0premiered at Sundance in January 2009,\u00a0THR<\/em>\u00a0praised it as a \u201csmart, moving but not inaccessible entry in the coming-of-age canon.\u201d Sony Pictures Classics released the title that October, and it became an awards darling, picking up three Oscar noms, including for best picture, and landing a BAFTA win for Mulligan.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n The actress returns to Berlin this year with Netflix\u2019s sci-fi drama\u00a0Spaceman<\/em>, starring opposite Adam Sandler.\u00a0An Education<\/em>\u00a0producer Finola Dwyer tells\u00a0THR<\/em>\u00a0that she still marvels at the acting choices made by Mulligan, currently an Oscar nominee for\u00a0Maestro<\/em>: \u201cWe already knew it, but she was the real\u00a0deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
