He means what he says. People did not take him literally and serious in 2016,\u201d said Clinton, who lost to Trump that year as the Democratic presidential nominee, while speaking Saturday at a panel at the Munich Security Conference in Germany. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Clinton\u2019s remarks were part of a nearly seven-minute response to being asked if Europe \u201ccan still rely\u201d on America.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow he is telling us what he intends to do and people who try to wish it away, rush it away, are living in an alternative reality. He will do everything he can to become an absolute authoritarian leader if given the opportunity to do so,\u201d she added later. \u201cAnd he will pull us out of NATO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She later warned the former president would pull the U.S. out of the alliance despite Congress\u2019s\u00a0recently passed legislation\u00a0that prevents any president from withdrawing the U.S. from NATO without <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roval from the Senate or an act of Congress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he will just not fund our obligations. So we may be there, you know, \u2018in name only,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cSo take it very seriously and continue to do what Europe needs to do on its own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment. <\/p>\n<p>Trump sparked a fury of concerns earlier this month after his remarks about the alliance, which raised questions about what a second term for the former president could mean for NATO.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>During a campaign rally earlier this month, Trump recalled an instance when a foreign leader questioned him about his threat not to defend members who do not hit the alliance\u2019s defense spending targets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t pay?\u201d Trump said he responded. \u201cYou\u2019re delinquent. No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. You gotta pay. You gotta pay your bills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former president repeatedly pressed\u00a0member nations to commit\u00a02 percent of their gross domestic product to defense spending.\u00a0NATO Secretary-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a>\u00a0Jens Stoltenberg\u00a0said\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/opinions_222258.htm\">at least half<\/a>\u00a0of the 31-member alliance is expected to meet that figure in 2024, which is up from\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/docu\/review\/articles\/2023\/07\/03\/defence-spending-sustaining-the-effort-in-the-long-term\/index.html\">seven members in 2022<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>He also emerged as a frequent critic of NATO and threatened\u00a0on numerous occasions\u00a0to withdraw from the alliance while in the White House.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), a staunch Trump ally who also spoke at the conference,\u00a0argued Europe is not doing enough\u00a0to ensure its defense.
