To drop a needle on any track in the Punjabi-American MC\u2019s extended catalog is to be swept away by his preternatural cleverness. His inspired internal rhyme schemes, encyclopedic knowledge of American and South Asian pop culture, and double-take punchlines should be enough to make him a staple of any self-respecting backpacker\u2019s bag. What pushes his work past these dusty confines is a keen awareness of his unique position in the rap world.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Take his verse on Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire\u2019s 2011 ur-posse cut \u201cThe Last Huzzah,\u201d for example: Next to Danny Brown, Despot, El-P, eXquire, and fellow Das Racist member Kool A.D., he satirizes himself as the \u201cworst r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er on this track\u201d (certainly not the case) but also astutely quips that he\u2019s the \u201cthird coolest.\u201d More importantly, he canonizes the hook of his eternally memeified (and now <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cMS1xCMkeSk\">commercialized<\/a>) fast food anthem, following \u201cI\u2019m at the Pizza Hut \/ I\u2019m at the Taco Bell\u201d with Raekwon\u2019s classic \u201cC.R.E.A.M.\u201d bar \u201cThe combination made my eyes bleed.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-259982\" class=\"content_block paragraph video triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire ft. Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown, EL-P - The Last Huzzah (Remix)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N0ijOe3sGEk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('259982');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-259987\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <i>LAFANDAR<\/i> \u2014 a collaborative album with the producer <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lapganlapgan\/\">Lapgan<\/a>, who grew up on Das Racist and idolized Heems before becoming the inaugural signee to his <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.veena.nyc\/\">Veena<\/a> label \u2014 marks Heems\u2019s return to hip-hop after the 2017 dissolution of his second rap crew, Swet Shop Boys with Riz Ahmed and Redinho. Not only is it clear from the first moments of track one \u2014 \u201cStupid Dumb Illiterate,\u201d featuring genre-agnostic, Carnatically trained singer Sid Sriram, that he hasn\u2019t lost a step lyrically; the intervening years seem to have brought him a wisdom to match his wit. The project only gets better as it moves along, with Heems\u2019s wordplay sharpening as Lapgan\u2019s production alchemizes a bottomless vault of obscure South Asian samples into hip-hop gold with increasing flare.<\/p>\n<p>            Heems and Lapgan\u2019s mind meld is most locked in on \u201cKala Tika\u201d and \u201cBukayo Saka,\u201d two tracks from the album\u2019s back half. The former song has some of the project\u2019s slickest wordplay, with Heems swapping his Vs and Ws with such sleight of hand it might fly under the radar if it weren\u2019t for him introducing the trick in the intro, while Lapgan winds a choral sample tightly around the drums and bass with the obsessive, cinematic precision of a young Kanye West. On the latter track, Lapgan\u2019s stoned, cloudy beat cloaks what is perhaps the punchline of the century: \u201cI roll around with two glizzies like I\u2019m <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8YamAsbzPKA\">like I\u2019m Slavoj \u017di\u017eek<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-259988\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 350px; height: 786px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1403908675\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/heems.bandcamp.com\/album\/lafandar\">LAFANDAR by Heems, Lapgan<\/a><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-259989\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            A full album of tracks like these would have left long-starved Heems heads with plenty to chew on, but he\u2019s further blessed his fans by calling in 13 features across the project\u2019s 12 tracks. Some highlights: Saul Williams delivers a potent spoken-word intro on  \u201cAccent,\u201d after which Heems reprises a hidden \u201cT5\u201d verse he performed on <i>Colbert<\/i> seven years ago over a Dilla-esque tapestry of a beat. Sonnyjim and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/abhithenomad\/\">Abhi the Nomad<\/a> join Heems for a fearsome three-pronged attack over a dissonant drone and dizzying guitars on \u201cGoing For 6.\u201d And Kool Keith sounds absurdly spry for 60 on the boom-bap throwback \u201cObi Toppin (Darling).\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Heems, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tinfoilfronts\/\">Lee Scott<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/coolcalmpete\/\">Cool Calm Pete<\/a> are all uncharacteristically menacing on \u201cBaba Ganoush,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>le teaming the album\u2019s hardest beat. Sir Michael Rocks and Open Mike Eagle both deliver stellar verses on the slow-rolling \u201cYellow Chakra,\u201d but Heems remains the center of attention, rhyming \u201cLexus,\u201d \u201csolar plexus,\u201d \u201cWaheguru please protect us,\u201d \u201cbacon egg and cheese for my breakfast,\u201d and \u201cLife is precious, the government neglect us.\u201d Finally, closer \u201cYo Momma\u201d unites Heems with fellow rap laureate Fatboi Sharif, who darkens the song\u2019s dreamy instrumental with his deliriously twisted aura.
