The chip designer today announced a deal with Nuro, a US startup in the autonomous vehicle (AV) sector \u2014 a growing market for Arm.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The partnership aims to accelerate the commercialisation of self-driving cars. Arm will bring its famed semiconductor IP to Nuro\u2019s vehicles, starting with the startup\u2019s delivery robots.<\/p>\n<p>With zero occupants inside, these AVs can fully focus on external road dangers, which<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0makes a useful stepping stone to broader autonomy.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As small, fully electric\u00a0machines, they also need maximum <span style=\"color: #0a0a0a;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(46, 146, 255, 0.008);\">efficiency \u2014<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a central selling point of\u00a0 Arm\u2019s designs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another attraction to Nuro is the breadth of Arm architectures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British firm is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> best known for powering <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arm.com\/markets\/consumer-technologies\/smartphones\">most of the world\u2019s smartphones<\/a>, but its tech is also found in endless other applications, from smart cities to laptops. Comparisons\u00a0to \u201cdata centres on wheels\u201d are now commonplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Arm, this makes the automotive segment extremely attractive. Since 2020, the company has more than doubled its revenues from the sector, the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a09c4500-27ae-42d7-8b3f-e6d13f1b3f3b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial Times reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year. That made it Arm\u2019s fastest-growing\u00a0unit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Robert Day, Arm\u2019s director of autonomous vehicles, said the industry has reached an i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nflection point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSoftware is becoming the driver \u2014 excuse the pun \u2014 for the next generation of vehicles,\u201d Day told TNW. \u201cThe software-defined vehicle is becoming a reality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At Nuro, that means <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">applying Arm\u2019s IP to the startup\u2019s autonomy stack, as well as the foundations of its next generation of the Nuro Driver, the core component of the company\u2019s AVs.
