{"id":610347,"date":"2024-02-26T23:51:58","date_gmt":"2024-02-26T20:51:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/internal-pentagon-review-finds-no-ill-intent-during-austins-hospitalization\/"},"modified":"2024-02-26T23:51:58","modified_gmt":"2024-02-26T20:51:58","slug":"internal-pentagon-review-finds-no-ill-intent-during-austins-hospitalization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/internal-pentagon-review-finds-no-ill-intent-during-austins-hospitalization\/","title":{"rendered":"#Internal Pentagon review finds no \u2018ill intent\u2019 during Austin\u2019s hospitalization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/GettyImages-1968506685.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Pentagon on Monday released the results of a 30-day review that found no attempt to hide\u00a0Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin\u2019s secret hospitalizations in December and January, effectively absolving officials of any wrongdoing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although a brief, unclassified summary of the review found processes could be improved, \u201cnothing examined during this review demonstrated any indication of ill intent or an attempt to obfuscate\u201d the transfer of authority during Austin\u2019s hospitalizations,\u00a0according to the document.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The rest of the review, which was carried out by Defense Department (DOD) officials, remains classified.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The three-page summary claims Austin\u2019s staff was limited in several \u201csignificant ways\u201d in failing to share\u00a0information, including\u00a0by medical privacy laws\u00a0and staff \u201chesitant to pry or share any information that they did learn\u201d due to privacy reasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The report also claims that because Austin\u2019s medical situation remained in flux, \u201ctimely secured communications could not be assured.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Austin entered the hospital on Jan. 1 and stayed for two weeks to treat an infection stemming from an earlier surgery in December to treat prostate cancer. But Austin did not inform the White House or his deputy Kathleen Hicks of the situation until Jan. 4, even though he had transferred his duties as Defense secretary to her on Jan. 2. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Congress and the public, meanwhile, did not learn Austin had been hospitalized until Jan. 5, drawing sharp criticism from lawmakers and the press.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Austin had also not informed the White House or other top Pentagon officials of his cancer diagnosis, which he was given in early December. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The incident prompted Kelly Magsamen, Austin\u2019s chief of staff, to direct the DOD\u2019s administration and management director to conduct an internal 30-day review of whether officials followed policies and procedures in transferring authority when Austin entered the hospital, which was released Monday. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough, as hindsight has shown, the process for making decisions to transfer the Secretary\u2019s authority could and should be improved \u2026 nothing examined during this review demonstrated any indication of ill intent or an attempt to obfuscate,\u201d the review states.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon\u2019s inspector <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> also launched a review of the situation. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Austin, who reviewed the report,\u00a0directed that its recommendations be implemented, according to a memo released alongside the unclassified summary. Among the recommendations are better information sharing and new guidance that would make an acting secretary better prepared to quickly step into the role if a transfer of authority is required.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon chief also earlier this month apologized for the gap in information.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be crystal clear: We did not handle this right. I did not handle this right. I should have told the president about my cancer diagnosis,\u201d\u00a0Austin said in a Feb. 1 press conference.\u00a0\u201cI should have also told my team and the American public, and I take full responsibility.
