She was 76.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Grav\u00e1tt died Friday at a hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, her son David Grav\u00e1tt told <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    A founding member of Robert Alexander\u2019s Living Stage at the famed Washington-based Arena Stage company, Grav\u00e1tt received a 1999 Theatre World trophy for her performance as 1940s Harlem resident Quilly McGrath in <em>The Old Settler<\/em> and a AUDELCO prize in 2004 for her turn as the bossy landlady Mrs. Dickson in <em>Intimate Apparel<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    On Broadway in 2001, she stood by for Leslie Uggams as Ruby in August Wilson\u2019s <em>King Hedley II<\/em> and portrayed Bessie James in Neil Simon\u2019s <em>45 Seconds From Broadway<\/em>, then appeared as Mrs. Muller in 2016 in the original Broadway production of John Patrick Shanley\u2019s <em>Doubt<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Her final Broadway appearance came when she understudied the role of Big Mama in <em>Cat on a Hot Tin Roof<\/em> opposite James Earl Jones in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIf I\u2019m employed, I\u2019m happy,\u201d she <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/magazine\/article\/actors-actor-3-20835\/\">told<\/a> <em>Backstage<\/em> in a 2019 interview. \u201cI always wanted to be the ing\u00e9nue, but I\u2019m usually cast as the pragmatic grandmother, even when I was young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    She also had a big fan in Oscar winner Viola Davis: <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Grav\u00e1tt was born in Harlem on May 24, 1947. Her birth father was tap dancer and co<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>n James \u201cStump\u201d Cross, but she was raised by adopted parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    She appeared on Broadway at age 4 in the original Broadway production of <em>The King and I<\/em>, starring Yul Brynner and Gertrude Lawrence, and performed in recitals at Carnegie Hall when she was 9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Grav\u00e1tt attended Fairmont Heights High in Capitol Heights, Maryland, and then Howard University, where she appeared in numerous productions before graduating in 1971. While in college, she also acted at the Living Stage, which launched in 1966.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Her stage r\u00e9sum\u00e9 included productions of <em>A Raisin in the Sun<\/em>, <em>Crowns<\/em>, <em>Miss Witherspoon<\/em>, <em>The Little Foxes<\/em>, <em>Skeleton Crew<\/em>, <em>The House That Will Not Stand<\/em> and, in her final theater appearance in 2018, <em>The Revolving Cycles Truly and Steadily Roll\u2019d<\/em> at The Duke in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    For television, Grav\u00e1tt was a regular on the 1999-2000 Showtime <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> <em>The Hoop Life<\/em>, guest-starred on three <em>Law &amp; Order<\/em> series and appeared on <em>Sex and the City<\/em>, <em>The Good Wife<\/em>, <em>30 Rock<\/em>, <em>Elementary<\/em>, <em>Madam Secretary<\/em>, <em>Ramy<\/em> and <em>East New York<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    And she could be seen on the big screen in <em>The Bounty Hunter<\/em> (2010), <em>Delivery Man<\/em> (2013), <em>Roman J. Israel, Esq.<\/em> (2017) and <em>The Outside Story<\/em> (2020).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Grav\u00e1tt was a founding faculty member at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, and she taught at Howard and Rutgers University as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Survivors include her sons, David (a former journalist at NBC <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>) and Oge; her grandchildren, Josephine, Lucas, Ishmale, Ishana and Isabella; and her half-sister, Peabody Award-winning documentarian June Cross.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
