He wasn\u2019t the only one \u2014 the label arranging the session had four other producers on deck. When I called 03 Greedo in mid-February, he didn&#8217;t bother telling me any of their names \u2014 \u201c[Giane] had every style I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t sound regional\u2026 He just had a universal sound and we locked in automatic,\u201d Greedo recalls. \u201cHe came in, he was ready for the assignment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s no small praise from 03, who has only grown more fastidious about his songcraft following a nearly five-year prison stint that froze the ultra-versatile Watts MC\u2019s nascent career in amber. \u201cI try to find something brand new, like no one else has a song like this,\u201d he explains of his beat selection. \u201cDo I like the song before I even got on it? It has to have that <i>energy<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            His features on Evilgiane\u2019s latest <i>#HEAVENSGATE VOL. 1<\/i> most definitely have that energy. There\u2019s the narcotized paranoia of \u201cSIP SIP,\u201d which Greedo calls \u201cnot really a r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er song \u2014 it\u2019s a song that a pop star would make.\u201d The aftertaste of Clase Azul is promptly washed away by the propulsive \u201cBEN DAWAVE,\u201d which finds 03 extolling his hip-hop dominance \u2014 he\u2019s \u201cbeen the wave,\u201d get it? Over the past year, his woozy beats (part New York drill, part digital cloud rap) have served as a springboard for inspired singles by Kendrick Lamar (\u201cThe Hillbillies\u201d with Baby Keem), Earl Sweatshirt (\u201cMaking the Band (Danity Kane)\u201d) and Playboi Carti (\u201cSights\u201d with A$AP Rocky).<\/p>\n<p>            But those high-profile collabs are just a fragment of the musical world Giane has carved out over the past five years as the linchpin of musical-collective-turned-label Surf Gang. That arc has encompassed the early music of OPIUM affiliate Babyxsosa, unreleased production work for Lil Uzi Vert, and collaborative projects with everyone from psychedelic Floridian 454 to the francophone Parisian Serane. <i>#HEAVENSGATE VOL. 1<\/i> is a curated highlight reel of Giane\u2019s career to date, seamlessly blending freshly recorded tracks and remastered favorites from the archives. The result is not only a wide-ranging sampler of Evilgiane\u2019s discography, but an intergenerational cross-section of the 2020s rap internet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            <iframe style=\"border-radius:12px\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/3KvLqvjycoPfH0DTkU9riY?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260150\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            \u201cI did \u2018<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=frdxWhk90V0\">SHOTTAZ<\/a>\u2019 when he first started sending me beats and shit, and then I had did \u2018<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=A0y55Ao7-Xo\">CROWDSURF<\/a>\u2019 last year,\u201d Queens rapper <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/deeaura13\/\">Dee Aura<\/a> tells me of his <i>#HEAVENSGATE<\/i> contributions over the phone. \u201cWe first met around 2021 but he had sent me some beats before that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            One of those beats was \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r8HRcZcKCec\">GIVE BACK<\/a>,\u201d an unorthodox sample drill song built around a thumping flip of \u201cAston Martin Music\u201d that quickly picked up viral steam: \u201cShoutout to Drake for showing love,\u201d Dee says.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cEverybody has the same samples, but you\u2019ll never find a sample like Giane does. That\u2019s why it\u2019s always special to work with him \u2014 never know what you\u2019re going to get.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Where most drill producers speed up samples into futurist blurs of motion, \u201cGIVE BACK\u201d welds a slowed snippet of Drake\u2019s hook to a typically uptempo drum pattern. But those drums \u2014 like those on <i>#HEAVENSGATE<\/i> \u2014 are tighter and more closed than the signature open-ended 808s skidding across the majority of the subgenre, setting Giane\u2019s production apart from the local scene. A similar trick animates \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T9X7KBEmDRk\">Myself<\/a>\u201d featuring Slimesito off 2021\u2019s <i>Surf Da World<\/i>, a collaborative mixtape by Evilgiane and K$upreme.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cEven though Giane be making sample drill, he know how to do it in a way where it don\u2019t sound like New York,\u201d Slimesito explains when I call him. &#8220;I be forgetting it\u2019s a sample drill beat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            Based in Atlanta, Slimesito also started working with Evilgiane before they physically met. \u201c2020, I had just got out of jail, I was pulling up [to New York] with DJ Rennessy, [and] he was already telling me about Giane. But I ended up going to the studio the next day with K$upreme\u201d \u2014 the pair have been close friends and collaborators since they first met in 2015 \u2014 \u201cand I rapped on two of his beats with K \u2018Preme. Slimesito tells me that like \u201cMyself,\u201d it was recorded in 2020. \u201cIt sounds like we just made it though, I swear to god.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That these early collaborations slot neatly beside their modern descendants is no small feat considering the accelerated lifecycles of music in the streaming era. \u201cHe got a timeless sound,\u201d Slimesito offers when I mention as much over the phone. Staggered hip-hop releases are even more uncommon thanks to the genre\u2019s rapid-fire output, but they certainly aren\u2019t unique \u2014 like Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, and Drakeo the Ruler, Slimesito and 03 Greedo also number among those rappers who have drip-fed fans \u201cnew\u201d music while incarcerated.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            \u201cBob Marley or Michael Jackson, the songs are forever. Whether Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles \u2014 a lot of [the greats] passed away before we were even born,\u201d Greedo points out. \u201cI go into it with a mindset like I\u2019m trying to make <i>those<\/i> songs.  People think something that does well in seven days is a hit, \u2018look at your first week sales!\u2019&#8230; So much business on top of the music takes away from the music, and me being tapped in artistically, it\u2019s not gonna stop there. We really trying to make some timeless shit, so it won\u2019t matter if it come out five years later.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260153\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>Everybody has the same samples, but you\u2019ll never find a sample like Giane does. \u2014 Dee Aura<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260154\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            You can\u2019t talk about Evilgiane without talking about Surf Gang. The story goes something like this: Giane Chenheu grew up in Brooklyn\u2019s Chinatown, the son of a producer father and songwriter mother. An avid skateboarder, Giane was a mainstay at Lower East Sideskateparks, where he started to meet the loose collection of rappers, singers, and producers who would become Surf Gang around 2017. The skate crew began experimenting with music, drawing more focused attention during the pandemic as their skills sharpened. In 2020 and 2021, Surf Gang was perhaps better known as the home base for Polo Perks, Babyxsosa and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mohbaretta\/\">Moh Baretta<\/a>, but as the group\u2019s producers racked up more credits and affiliated artists moved on to other projects, the focus shifted to the architects of the collective\u2019s sound.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cEven if it\u2019s been up and down with who\u2019s been in and out,\u201d Evilgiane, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/harrrrisonnnn\/?hl=en\">Harrison<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/eera_1\/?hl=en\">Eera<\/a> are the heart of the collective, according to longtime collaborator <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/harto_falion\/?hl=en\">Harto Falion<\/a>, who connected with the group in 2019. \u201cThe style, the tape, the sound, the direction and the people they tend to work with \u2014 that\u2019s Surf Gang.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Hailing from Woodbridge, Virginia, Falion has been making music for more than a decade under the name <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trip<\/a> Dixon, producing songs for D.C.\u2019s Goth Money Records and LA\u2019s GothBoiClique. With four appearances across the album\u2019s 45-minute runtime, Harto is the most prolific guest on <i>#HEAVENSGATE<\/i>, just ahead of K$upreme and Surf Gang associate <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/burberry_hummer\/?hl=en\">JDN<\/a>. On the phone, Falion tells me his features were recorded over the past two-and-a-half years, with the droning Eera coproduction \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/aloevine\/evilgiane-harto-falion-eera\">141<\/a>\u201d born out of the same sessions as 2023\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/8-11-early-bird-special\/sets\/babyg_lock\"><i>babyg_Lock<\/i><\/a>, a joint tape with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nolanberollin\/?hl=en\">NOLANBEROLLIN<\/a>. I love the percussion almost every time for almost anything they make, so I don\u2019t really think that much about it, but the melodies, the feeling they put into it\u2026 It just feels like a recipe for greatness. I feel like I can kind of think a little bit better when I hear those beats. It&#8217;s got that little pinch of whatever it is that makes it feels like it&#8217;s gonna last forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cHe has no limits,\u201d Queens rapper FLEE declares five minutes into our interview. \u201cHis sound ranges all over the place.\u201d The plugg rapper isn\u2019t sure exactly how he connected with Evilgiane, but he\u2019s pretty sure he first heard of the producer through Babyxsosa\u2019s music. Whatever the particulars, the pair started working together, yielding a handful of SoundCloud tracks followed by more official releases.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260159\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Across <i>#HEAVENSGATE<\/i>, Evilgiane coaxes his collaborators into unusual sonic territory. \u201cThe sound I mostly like, me and my friends call it Yoshi, like from Mario,\u201d FLEE tells me on a call. \u201cIt sound like a bunch of Yoshis running through a field of happiness.\u201d If Evilgiane\u2019s beat for the hooky \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rTon07ZQfOw\">1 TO WHENEVER<\/a>\u201d (off FLEE\u2019s September album, <i>GHOST<\/i>) sounds like 64-bit dinosaurs jumping on a very squeaky bed, booming <i>#HEAVENSGATE<\/i> cut \u201cBRANDY\u201d sounds like Bowser stomping all over a tiny Italian plumber. \u201cDoing \u2018BRANDY,\u2019 that\u2019s not the typical sound I do,\u201d FLEE agrees. \u201cAnd a different sound is always going to bring out a different FLEE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cHe always got some crazy weird sounds that catch my attention,\u201d says Dee Aura. \u201cYou can get a sad vibe out of him, you can get a crazy vibe out of him, you can also get an <i>unexplainable<\/i> vibe outta him.\u201d Slimesito tells me Giane is among the few producers he lets pick beats for him; the pair have a mixtape together, <i>Evil Slime<\/i>, set to drop this spring. \u201cHe pushed me to be more experimental, more creative,\u201d Sito says. \u201cHis beats be so advanced and they got so much going on with the sounds that I gotta lock in and flow a certain way.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260158\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BRANDY\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/71HXnuQw4Tk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('260158');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260160\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            \u201cGiane has a really good way about rhythm,\u201d Massachusetts singer-songwriter LUCY (aka Cooper B. Handy) says over the phone. \u201cWhere he places the kicks and where he\u2019ll throw in a clap \u2014  it\u2019s not \u2018hard\u2019 to predict, but it\u2019s also not easy to predict. I\u2019ve heard a lot of beats where he\u2019ll throw in some percussion sound where it almost offsets the rhythm, but it doesn\u2019t actually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            LUCY\u2019s off-kilter pop songs aren\u2019t too far removed from the music made by Harto Falion and Babyxsosa, but he\u2019s mostly preferred to self-produce, using a limited palette of Garageband presets. Though he assures me more solo albums are on the way, as well as an EP by his punk duo Taxidermists, this year has found LUCY folding outsiders into the contours of his eclectic sound via an album with Minneapolis beatmaker i.v and a forthcoming tape \u201call on Surf Gang beats.\u201d Like those projects, his song on <i>#HEAVENSGATE<\/i>, \u201cWHAT SHE\u2019S HAVING,\u201d stems from an impulse to cede control: \u201cIf I\u2019m not in control of how the music sounds, but I like how it sounds, all my efforts go into what I can make my voice do so it\u2019s still my energy on this track.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            \u201cWHAT SHE\u2019S HAVING\u201d is shimmering refractive dance music, buoyed by evaporative synths that recall <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stereogum.com\/2244988\/evilgiane-surf-gang-are-changing-the-sound-of-hip-hop\/interviews\/qa\/\">the vaporwave tinkerings of Evilgiane\u2019s youth<\/a>; the pulsing beat foregrounds the latent influence of club music in both artists\u2019 discography. Feeling particularly inspired by a beat he \u201ccouldn\u2019t stop listening to,\u201d LUCY\u2019s airy chants defamiliarize everyday phrases like \u201cI can help whoever\u2019s next over here\u201d in their repetitions.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cI always wanted to say that [in a song]. I\u2019m already knowing him through one of my best mans,  [so] working with him is great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            The riotous jangle of \u201c40\u201d prompts a charmingly menacing string of bars before Xaviersobased passes the baton to Nettspend midverse, who raps approximately four bars and im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely dips. \u201c40\u201d represents a cross-generational alliance of sorts, even if the distinction between 2018 and 2020 SoundCloud is negligible to casual onlookers: \u201cThe vibe stayed the same, but musically, the music is just <i>way<\/i> more fried, way more bass, way faster,\u201d says Xavier. But more importantly, it fucking rips.<\/p>\n<p>            The biggest strength of <i>#HEAVENSGATE VOL. 1 <\/i> is its connective tissue \u2014 how Evilgiane sutures together disparate moments and regional sounds until their edges sit flush at the seams. These are smaller gaps than those he\u2019s bridged between, say, pop punk and sample drill, but <i>#HEAVENSGATE<\/i> prioritizes polished execution over raw concepts, no wrinkle too minor to iron out.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260164\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EVILGIANE \u2013 BASIC FEAT ANYCIA &amp; ROBB BANKS #SURFGANG\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/seIEbQlwxQU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('260164');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260165\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Although I\u2019m partial towards \u201cBEN DAWAVE,\u201d the song that best encapsulates the tape\u2019s syncretic ethos might be the lead single \u201cBASIC.\u201d Giane\u2019s muted beat has a hydraulic bounce but always cedes the spotlight to Atlanta rapper Anycia and South Florida\u2019s own Robb Bank$, both rapping their asses off. And to hear Banks tell it, it all came together in less than half an hour: \u201cShe went in there first, knocked her shit down real quick, maybe five, 10 minutes, [and] I did the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Robb and Anycia have been friends for a minute, ever since meeting through mutual acquaintances in Atlanta. \u201cShe\u2019s very truthful in her raps, and I also love her tone,\u201d Banks says. \u201cThe tone reminds me a lot of myself, that deep tone.\u201d So when they both happened to be visiting New York at the same time, Anycia invited him to the studio.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cI was just gonna come drop a verse off, and then Giane was there, just sitting in the studio playing beats,\u201d says Banks. \u201cI actually didn\u2019t even know it was going to be Giane\u2019s [song], I thought it was going on Anycia\u2019s tape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            How many times can one person be in the right place at the right time? \u201cAs many times as they\u2019re prepared for,\u201d <i>#HEAVENSGATE VOL. 1 <\/i> seems to answer.
