She was the lead singer of the NYC DIY indie band <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tinyhazard.bandcamp.com\/\">Tiny Hazard<\/a>, whose early music tended to clatter between delicate melodies and squealing dissonance and eventually coalesced into something more luscious by their final release a half-decade ago. Back now under her own name, with a debut album, <i>Fire Escape<\/i>, out via Ruination on March 22, Spanger\u2019s songs are as richly unpredictable as those early Tiny Hazard tracks, but her tricks are far subtler, her vocal flourishes, melodic feints, and unlikely arrangements adding up to something that rewards repeated listens.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            The first two singles from <i>Fire Escape<\/i> showcased much of what makes Spanger\u2019s music so im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely enticing. Her voice is playful but potent, and crucially she has the confidence and control to push it to its limits and pull it back to a whisper. On \u201cAgios,\u201d her voice itself becomes a commentary on the argument the song is about \u2014 \u201cA fickle girl, a changing tongue,\u201d she half-talks \u2014 and on \u201cDifficult People,\u201d an almost-ballad, she trapezes up and down her range. There\u2019s something of Bj\u00f6rk and Joanna <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>om to Spanger\u2019s sound, but what she\u2019s doing in her voice and her arrangements is more tangibly off this world, less ethereal. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260237\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alena Spanger - All That I Wanted (Official Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RAzGjK32BEk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('260237');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260233\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Her latest single, \u201cAll That I Wanted,\u201d is a weirder song than those two, more skittish, drum machines <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>ping over handclaps and synth bursts. Her chorus \u2014 \u201cAll that I wanted was to dance with you\u201d \u2014 sounds almost joyful at first, but that\u2019s just a thin veil for her frustration: \u201cPeople think they know \/ But you\u2019re just a mosquito \/ Draining me out \/ And I\u2019m gonna fucking burst,\u201d she sing-talks over layers of herself. I love that Spanger\u2019s voice leading up to that moment, murmurs and breaths at the top of her register, mimics a mosquito at close range. In an email to The FADER, Spanger said that the song was inspired lyrically by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oag3I4VRXyM&amp;pp=ygUjam9hbiBhcm1hdHJhZGluZyBsb3ZlIGFuZCBhZmZlY3Rpb24%3D\">Joan Armatrading\u2019s \u201cLove and Affection\u201d<\/a>: \u201cHer lyric \u2018but with a lover I can really move \u2026 I can really dance\u2019 stuck with me when I was feeling claustrophobic in a relationship. It\u2019s about the craving for an experience that is uninhibited by words or a compulsion to name and analyze.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <i>Fire Escape<\/i> was recorded over a five-year stretch \u2014 it\u2019s effectively a compilation of the music Spanger has been working on since Tiny Hazard disbanded \u2014 and it features production from Tiny Hazard\u2019s Ryan Weiner, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/carlostruly\/\">Carlos Hernandez<\/a> (Ava Luna and Carlos Truly) and Winston Cook-Wilson (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/officeculture.bandcamp.com\/album\/big-time-things\">Office Culture<\/a>). <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/juliancubillos.com\/\">Julian Cubillos<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/teasea.bandcamp.com\/\">teasea<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/carmenrothwell.com\/bio\">Carmen Quill<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kalia.vandever\/?hl=en\">Kalia Vandever<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kitba.music\/\">Kitba<\/a> (Rebecca El-Saleh) contribute, too. Spanger\u2019s first music under her own name inevitably reflects all of that, bursting out in different directions, changing course from track to track. But even across these first three songs, Spanger sounds instinctive and unrestrained, communicating raw emotions in unexpected ways.
