Under the terms of the pact, Mistral receives access to the US tech giant\u2019s supercomputers. In return, Microsoft can offer Azure cloud customers access to the startup\u2019s latest AI models.<\/p>\n<p>These models have made Mistral Europe\u2019s closest rival to OpenAI \u2014 another Microsoft partner. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Commission is looking into agreements that have been concluded between large digital market players and generative AI developers and providers,\u201d a Commission spokesperson said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Regulators will now decide whether to launch a formal investigation. That would have the potential to unwind the deal.<\/p>\n<p>According to Alex Haffner, a competition partner at UK law firm Fladgate, the<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0key issue is the extent of Microsoft\u2019s minority interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe EU merger control rules only bite if one party acquires a \u2018decisive influence\u2019 over another,\u201d he said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In essence, this would mean Microsoft can<\/span> influence Mistral\u2019s business behaviour through shareholder rights or related contractual means.<\/p>\n<p>The EU must now determine whether Microsoft has acquired such rights.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mistral_lobbying_raises_eyebrows\"><\/span>Mistral lobbying raises eyebrows<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Lawmakers from the bloc are also suspicious of the deal\u2019s influence on the AI Act.<\/p>\n<p>During negotiations in November, Mistral lobbied to loosen rules on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>-purpose AI models.
