\n A blimp billed as the \u201cworld\u2019s most efficient large aircraft\u201d \u2014\u00a0but better known as the \u201cThe Flying Bum\u201d \u2014 is app<\/a>lying for approval to take off.<\/p>\n

Officially named the Airlander 10, the voluptuous vehicle resembles the legendary Zeppelin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Like its fabled ancestor<\/span>, the Airlander is greener than the commercial planes currently spraying CO2 across the sky. Much greener, in fact.<\/p>\n

Powered by a combination of electricity and helium, the aircraft promises zero-emissions flights by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s also got a sizeable capacity. The bulbous blimp can fit 100 seats or a 10-tonne payload between those shapely curves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Those assets will now be inspected by aviation regulators. The Airlander\u2019s owner, Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV), announced today that it\u2019s begun a process called Type Certification, which paves a path towards permission to fly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Britain\u2019s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will now evaluate the safety of the aircraft.<\/p>\n

HAV is optimistic that the green light is in sight. Tom Grundy, the company\u2019s CEO, heralded the application as a stepping stone to ultra-low emission flights.<\/p>\n

\u201cAirlander makes new, sustainable aviation services possible at scale \u2013 it\u2019s a large aircraft designed to deliver services from large global fleets,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlongside our production programme, applying for Type Certification is a key milestone in our journey towards this goal.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the applications, the CAA will move on to broader assessments \u2014 including flight tests.<\/p>\n

At HAV, the anticipation is growing. The company already has \u00a31bn of reserved orders for the Airlander 10.<\/p>\n

Initial customers include Air Nostrum Group, which has booked 20 Airlanders for passengers. Another order will take eco-tourists on adventures to far-flung destinations.<\/p>\n

Up to 24 aircraft a year are also set to be produced at a new site in South Yorkshire, UK.<\/p>\n

If everything goes to plan, we\u2019ll all soon get a worm\u2019s eye view of that curvaceous derriere.<\/p>\n
