He was 76.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Bordwell died Thursday after a long illness, the University of Wisconsin-Madison <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/commarts.wisc.edu\/2024\/03\/remembering-professor-emeritus-david-bordwell\/\">announced<\/a>. He taught at the school from 1973 until his retirement in 2004 and was its Jacques Ledoux Professor Emeritus of Film Studies at the time of his death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    For more than two decades, Bordwell supplied commentaries, visual and written essays and interviews for films in the Criterion Collection and was seen and heard on 50 insightful episodes of <em>Observations on Film Art<\/em> on the Criterion Channel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In a statement, Criterion <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C3_fIkhMsUW\/?igsh=ZWMyNDBlOTQyNg%3D%3D\">called him<\/a> \u201ca great, longtime friend and a tireless champion of cinema who spent decades imparting his wisdom and passion onto film lovers around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Bordwell wrote his essential textbooks <em>Film Art: An Introduction<\/em>, first published in 1979, and <em>Film History: An Introduction<\/em>, first published in 1994. Both were authored with his wife, Kristin Thompson, a fellow UW professor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The couple also published an authoritative film blog at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/davidbordwell.net\">davidbordwell.net<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In all, Bordwell authored, co-authored or edited some 22 books and monographs and more than 140 journal articles, book chapters, introductions to collections and review essays, UW said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Bordwell was born on July 23, 1947, in Penn Yan, New York. \u201cI grew up on a farm and so didn\u2019t have the easy access to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> that kids in cities would have,\u201d he said in 2006.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI began to watch classic movies on TV late at night while also reading books like Arthur Knight\u2019s <em>The Liveliest Art<\/em> and Paul Rotha\u2019s <em>The Film Till Now<\/em>. \u2026 So in a weird way I got more of my awareness of film from reading than from viewing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    He graduated from the State University of New York at Albany in 1969 after studying English literature and joined the faculty at the UW\u2019s Department of Communication Arts im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely after completing coursework for his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    His writings included 1980\u2019s <em>The Films of Carl-Theodor Dreyer<\/em>; 1985\u2019s <em>The Classical Hollywood Cinema: Film Style and Mode of Production to 1960<\/em>; 1988\u2019s <em>Ozu and the Poetics of Cinema<\/em>; 2000\u2019s <em>Planet Hong Kong<\/em>; 2005\u2019s <em>Figures Traced in Light: On Cinematic Staging<\/em>; and 2006\u2019s <em>The Way Hollywood Tells It: Story and Style in Modern Movies<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Among Bordwell\u2019s favorite films, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/obituary\/david-bordwell-dead-film-scholar-1234959386\/\">according to <em>IndieWire<\/em><\/a>, were <em>Passing Fancy<\/em> (1933), <em>How Green Was My Valley<\/em> (1941), <em>Sanshiro Sugata<\/em> (1943), <em>Song of the South<\/em> (1946), <em>Advise and Consent <\/em>(1962), <em>Zorns Lemma<\/em> (1970), <em>Choose Me<\/em> (1984), <em>Back to the Future<\/em> (1985) and<em> The Hunt for Red October<\/em> (1990).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In addition to his wife, survivors include his sisters, Diane and Darlene; his nephew, Sanjeev; and his niece, Kamini.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Screenwriter, director and producer James Schamus, a three-time Oscar nominee, paid tribute to Bordwell in a statement to UW:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cAs a filmmaker, I can describe David\u2019s friendship as unnervingly generous. His astonishing critical intelligence never got in the way of his enthusiasms, and his enthusiasms never dampened his analytic regard; they were functions of each other,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cThis meant that when talk came around to one\u2019s own work, the effect was something akin to getting a loving bear hug from a nuclear-powered microscope.
