Dee-1 has pointed out what he calls \u201cselective outrage\u201d in Hip Hop, noting that it can send mixed signals to younger listeners.<\/p>\n

In an interview with The Breakfast Club<\/em> that aired on Friday (March 1), the New Orleans rapp<\/a>er shared his thoughts on the things people in the Hip Hop community choose to be angry about.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe got a lot of selective outrage in the Black community in general<\/a>,\u201d he began. \u201cA lot of selective outrage. If a white person says the N word one time \u2014 all it take is one time for them to say it \u2014 and we at they top. We on they head: \u2018Oh, no. You said the n-word?\u2019 We tryna cancel you. We ain\u2019t never let you forget that.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut if artists, when they rap about murdering people in 50 percent of their songs, but in the other 50 \u2014 or in 80 percent of their songs \u2014 and in the other 20, they\u2019re talking about economic empowerment and positive stuff, should that be okay? We\u2019re content with a state of lukewarm-ness \u2026That\u2019s confusing to these kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also noted that the students he teaches struggle to relate to anything outside of the music they hear.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m with the kids on a daily basis,\u201d the 38-year-old added. \u201cI\u2019m a college professor currently, in addition to being a rapper \u2026 I\u2019m seeing that these kids who ain\u2019t from the trenches at all, now their identity is rooted in, \u2018Well, if I\u2019m Black, I gotta be able to relate to this type of music to even feel like I\u2019m authentically Black.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that\u2019s because that\u2019s what\u2019s getting pushed \u2026 We made it from that, we shouldn\u2019t have to be glorifying that stuff. There\u2019s a difference between narration and glorification.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the interview, the rapper discussed his own struggles with mental health, specifically after his part in the 2014 BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight after that BET Cypher, I started going to therapy, bro,\u201d he shared. \u201cI was signed to RCA at the time. You on the BET Cypher and you think your life about to change after this night \u2026 Nothing changed after that night. After that, I felt like I blew my shot.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt started messing with me mentally to where I was like, \u2018Damn, I kinda don\u2019t even wanna be here no more. Not in the industry, but on this Earth \u2026 When I started realizing I was having suicidal thoughts behind feeling like I\u2019m professionally a failure, I realized I couldn\u2019t separate David from Dee-1 at that point. And that was unhealthy.\u201d<\/p>\n
