The thought still hadn\u2019t crossed his mind 10 years later, when he first visited her native Hong Kong, but the wheels were set in motion on that <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Standing on Ma Tau Wai Road, the busy thoroughfare where her birth certificate claimed she was born, he was overcome by the sounds of the city \u2014 muted though they were by the surrounding skyscrapers \u2014 and the smell of incense wafting from a nearby pagoda where monks knelt in prayer. \u201cI had the reflex to grab my phone and write down what I wanted to say to her,\u201d he remembers. \u201cI needed that closeness, the feeling of proximity with my mom.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260318\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bolis Pupul - Ma Tau Wai Road (with Salah Pupul) (Official Music Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bwaWx-3fGiA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('260318');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260315\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Pupul makes an irreverently framed but carefully curated strain of dance music that contains in its DNA the early experiments of Kraftwerk, the new beat grooves of his native Belgium, the techno and house of the \u201880s American midwest, and the latter genre\u2019s French variants in the \u201890s (e.g. Daft Punk) and \u201800s (e.g. Justice). It was Stephen and David Dewaele of Soulwax, though, who were most instrumental in shaping the arc of his career. Idolizing them as a teenager, he was one of the first artists to join DEEWEE, the label they founded in 2015. For his first long-form release, 2022\u2019s <i>Topical Dancer<\/i>, he teamed with his labelmate, vocalist <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/adigerwww\/?hl=en\">Charlotte Adig\u00e9ry<\/a>, sewing his multifarious stylistic inspirations into a seamless, shiny suit whose extravagance belied the meaty <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> critique in the body of his partner\u2019s tongue-in-cheek lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>            When he came back from his first Hong Kong trip, the Dewaeles asked him to read the letter he\u2019d written his mother. \u201cMy heart is in my throat \/ My eyes filled with tears,\u201d it starts. \u201cThis is where you were born \/ 59 years ago \/ And I\u2019m finally here \/ Why did it take me so long?\u201d They immediately suggested he make it the centerpiece of his album. When he returned to Hong Kong the following year, they encouraged him to write or record something new every day. Audio captured at the intersection that inspired the project\u2019s founding document, for instance, sets the scene for the letter\u2019s reading on its opener and title track.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            \u201cLetter To Yu\u201d is a grand, slow march, but the album is an upbeat affair overall, pulling on the same uplifting electronic threads Pupul has used in the past. His trips to Hong Kong, he says, were overwhelmingly positive experiences, despite the grief that inspired them. \u201cI was discovering so many things that it wouldn&#8217;t make sense to me if I\u2019d only made a sad record about mourning the loss of my mom,\u201d he explains. On \u201cCompletely Half,\u201d he sings about the many moments during his stay in Hong Kong when he felt sure he saw her in the street or on the train, but only for a split second. On the album\u2019s multi-lingual closer \u201cCosmic R\u00e9ndesvous,\u201d he\u2019s more direct with his allusions to the supernatural. \u201cWill you be able to contribute to the creative pool of the universe so that something remains permanent after you leave this planet?\u201d he asks in Dutch.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            \u201cMy mom was very spiritual, and it&#8217;s easier for me to connect with her in a spiritual way, when I meditate or when I&#8217;m in a pagoda burning incense,\u201d he tells me. \u201cWhen she passed away, I could feel her in the wind. Sometimes I went for walks in nature, and it felt like she was embracing me when the wind was heavy, and I embraced the wind. It was like she was there with me.
