\n Oscar-nominated Irish actor\u00a0Stephen Rea\u00a0(The Crying Game<\/a>, Michael Collins<\/em>,\u00a0Greta<\/em>) will be honored with the Irish Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement for his \u201coutstanding contribution to the Irish and international screen industry,\u201d the\u00a0Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) unveiled on Wednesday. <\/p>\n

\n Rea will be presented with the honor in the presence of family, friends and industry colleagues at\u00a0the\u00a021st IFTA Awards ceremony, taking place\u00a0on\u00a0Saturday, April 20\u00a0at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre. The evening will be hosted by\u00a0Baz Ashmawy,\u00a0one of Ireland\u2019s most popular TV personalities.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cSo much of Irish culture has been recovered and reimagined: music, language, literature, theater,\u201d Rea said. \u201cAnd cinema can be added to that list because of the special energy of John Boorman who produced Neil Jordan\u2019s first film Angel<\/em>. And to my astonishment, my first film too. Neil thrust the script<\/a> and a saxophone into my hands, and suddenly I was in the movies<\/a>. Well, one really original movie, which was at the beginning of a new confidence in Irish cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n IFTA lauded Rea for having worked \u201cwith renowned filmmakers, such as Mike Leigh and Robert Altman,\u201d and having \u201cappeared on screen with stars including Emily Blunt, Daniel Craig, Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson, Cillian Murphy, Ralph Fiennes, Julianne Moore, Isabelle Huppert, Martin Sheen, Annette Bening, Robert Downey Jr., Kate Beckinsale, Paul Dano, Lily James, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Firth, Julia Roberts, Colin Farrell, Helena Bonham Carter, Andie McDowell, Forest Whitaker, Jim Broadbent, Laura Linney, Kathy Bates, Maggie Smith, and Miranda Richardson.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n He received an Oscar nomination in 1992 for his lead role in\u00a0The Crying Game<\/em> \u201cas morally conflicted IRA kidnapper Fergus who becomes embroiled in a complex romance in Troubles-era London,\u201d IFTA said. \u201cThe nuance Stephen brought to this portrayal of an Irish Republican opened the eyes of an international audience to the complicated nature of the violence happening here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n IFTA also highlighted: \u201cHe has appeared in big-screen and small-screen blockbusters like\u00a0V For Vendetta, Underworld: Awakening\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0War & Peace<\/em>, as well as roles in award-winning TV series, such as\u00a0The English<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Honourable Woman<\/em>. His enduring passion and commitment to theater has remained steadfast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Rea has won three IFTA Awards out of nine overall nominations. He has also received three BAFTA TV Awards nominations and won a BAFTA in 2015 as best supporting actor for his role in The Honourable Woman<\/em>. <\/p>\n

\n IFTA CEO\u00a0\u00c1ine Moriarty\u00a0lauded the star\u2019s work and accomplishments.\u00a0\u201cAs a pioneer of his craft, Stephen\u2019s profound contribution to our industry has left an indelible mark,\u201d she said. \u201cHe brings such an intelligent and intuitive approach to his craft and his performances, with authentic depth and honesty, and a uniquely Irish stoicism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Concluded the IFTA boss: \u201cHe has become one of Ireland\u2019s most respected and beloved actors. His commitment to the craft and to our community has made him an integral part of our cinematic history and the legacy of Irish film, theater and television.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The 2024 IFTA Award nominations will be unveiled\u00a0on Thursday, March 14.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
