Whether that\u2019s writing sharp, grabby tracks to light up their stacked roster of live shows, or vocalist Julia Vassallo\u2019s interrogation of her own mind, there is an urgency for movement and change. It\u2019s exciting to hear a band sound hungry like this so I was glad to hear that same energy runs through the rest of <i>Crush<\/i>, due out on May 24 via So Young Records, a reliable incubator of buzzy guitar bands.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260432\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KSOv-3Xejnk\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KSOv-3Xejnk%0A<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('260432');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260429\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            The EP opens with \u201cMonday,\u201d in which Vassallo grabs vainly at past memories as a means to recapture some form of lost happiness. She thinks back to when wearing a fun pair of socks and watching a properly scary movie were enough to put her in a good mood. Those days seem long gone as the intensity of making a living and finding joy in snatched moments between shifts takes its toll, leaving her weary and jaded. She hisses at those around her, blaming \u201cyour daddy\u2019s capitalism\u201d for the bind she\u2019s in. The rest of the band Joseph Skimmons (guitar), Paul Knepple (guitar), Ryan Duffin (bass), and Akiva Henig (drums) conjure up that helpless feeling of time sprinting by with pacy guitars and drums that move faster than another calendar month. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            \u201cMonday\u201d\u2019s clanging post-punk spirit is a world away from \u201cApollo,\u201d the second and, for my money, best, track on the EP. Named after the god of sunlight and poetry, it\u2019s a song about overcoming the fear of ending a relationship. There\u2019s a lightness to this song that, nonetheless, matches the emotional heft of Vassallo\u2019s words. Scared of being alone, she questions everything and almost cracks as she admits, \u201cI always thought that I knew how to sing but you wrote the notes so I don\u2019t know anything.\u201d Lyrically and musically it reminds me a little of another New York band, The Stills, and their song \u201cChanges Are No Good.\u201d Both capture a temporary confidence being undercut by self-doubt. Only one was released in 2003 but they could easily have come out on the same day.  <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260433\" class=\"content_block paragraph video triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K2j8tHUoaC0%20\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K2j8tHUoaC0%20<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('260433');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-260430\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            In a statement accompanying <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of the EP, the band acknowledges the influence of densely populated city life on their work: \u201cA crowd of people pressed closely together. To squeeze forcefully so as to damage, or distort in shape. To violently subdue. To bring about an overwhelming feeling of disappointment. A brief but intense infatuation for someone, especially someone unattainable. <i>Crush<\/i> is an intimate snapshot of a life and a commentary on human nature as a whole. It represents the dual and cyclical nature of love and loss. To have, to hold, to break, to burn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            There is a lot to say about the soaring cost of inner-city life and how it affects both creativity and personal relationships. Some artists lean into the political backdrop to this increasingly unworkable situation while others use their music as a form of escape.
