\n History repeated itself on Wednesday night when the Yankees drafted Austin Wells 28th overall in the 2020 MLB Draft.<\/p>\n

But for Wells, who the Yankees originally drafted in the 35th round in 2018, two years made a world of difference.<\/p>\n

After emerging as top prospect in the summer of 2017, Wells hurt his elbow and wasn\u2019t able to participate in his senior season at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. Regardless, the Yankees drafted Wells in 2018.<\/p>\n

At the time, Wells and his family decided it would be best for him to honor his commitment to the University of Arizona and pass on signing a professional contract.<\/p>\n

\u201cComing here was the best decision I ever made,\u201d Wells told Tucson.com in February. \u201cSo I\u2019m super thankful \u2026 not thankful that (my injury) happ<\/a>ened, but I\u2019m thankful that I was able to go through this process, because I feel so much more prepared to play baseball at the next level.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wells went on to dominate in his first season with Arizona, slashing .353\/.462\/.552 and becoming the first Wildcat to be named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Before the coronavirus pandemic cut his sophomore campaign short, Wells was batting .375 with a .527 on-base percentage.<\/p>\n

In 1 \u00bd seasons with the Wildcats, Wells finished with 99 hits, seven home runs and 74 RBIs.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod has an interesting path sometimes,\u201d Austin\u2019s father, Greg Wells, said via Tucson.com. \u201cIf you look at where Austin is at today versus where he would have been signing out of high school, he\u2019s a better person, a better man, more educated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wells, who was the third catcher taken in the first round Wednesday, was also named the Cape Cod League Outstanding Pro Prospect in 2019.<\/p>\n

Draft guru Jonathan Mayo previously told The Post that he thinks Wells, now 20 years old, can make it to The Bronx sooner than later.<\/p>\n
