\n There are no fans allowed inside the Billie Jean King Tennis Center this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that didn\u2019t stop Giovanni Bartocci from cheering on his favorite player and friend Saturday in Flushing Meadows.<\/p>\n

Playing on outer Court 17 during the afternoon session, Matteo Berrettini could hear Bartocci \u2014 the owner of the destroyed East Village Italian restaurant Via Della Pace \u2014 supporting him loudly from the other side of the fence outside the grounds of the U.S. Open.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think nobody didn\u2019t hear him. Was really loud today. I think louder than the other days,\u201d Berrettini said after advancing to the fourth round with a straight-sets victory over Casper Ruud of Norway.<\/p>\n

In past years, Berrettini made it a ritual to eat during the Open at Bartocci\u2019s rustic Manhattan restaurant, which was destroyed in a fire in February, ahead of the worldwide pandemic shutdown.<\/p>\n

Berrettini said he\u2019s been using Uber Eats and other delivery app<\/a>s for food inside the bubble during this year\u2019s Open, but he hopes to help out Bartocci, if possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really sorry, no, of course, because I can\u2019t go there for the virus, but I\u2019m really sorry for this guy, because his restaurant was everything for him,\u201d Berrettini said. \u201cLast year, I was going there every night after my match. And I\u2019m really sorry, because he got a little bit bad luck twice for the, I mean, for the fire and for the virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I\u2019m really looking forward to try to help him maybe a little bit. I don\u2019t know what we can do. He\u2019s struggling. I don\u2019t know if he\u2019s going to come back in Italy, but I\u2019m really thankful that he\u2019s here. He\u2019s enjoying a little bit different this year. But he\u2019s a nice guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2019 Open semifinalist will face Russian Andrey Rublev \u2014 a straight-sets winner Saturday over Italy\u2019s Salvatore Caruso \u2014 in the fourth round.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
