\n After Texas Gov. Greg Abbott told artists boycotting SXSW over its U.S. Army sponsorship, \u201cdon\u2019t come back,\u201d the Austin-based festival is saying that it does not agree with that sentiment. \u201cWe are an organization that welcomes diverse viewpoints,\u201d the fest said in an Instagram post Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\n In the lead up to SXSW, multiple musical acts that were scheduled for the perform pulled out,<\/a> citing the U.S. Army\u2019s \u201csuper\u201d sponsorship of fest, as well as America\u2019s ongoing military support of Israel\u2019s war in Gaza. (Other \u201csuper\u201d sponsors, which are granted the highest level of visibility at the fest, include Volkswagen, Porsche, and Delta.)<\/p>\n

\n Abbott wrote on X on Tuesday: \u201cBands pull out of SXSW over U.S. Army sponsorship. Bye. Don\u2019t come back. Austin remains the HQ for the Army Futures Command. San Antonio is Military City USA. We are proud of the U.S. military in Texas. If you don\u2019t like it, don\u2019t come here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cSXSW does not agree with Governor Abbott,\u201d read a statement on the festival\u2019s Instagram<\/a> in a post that included a screenshot of the Governor\u2019s X post. \u201cWe are an organization that welcomes diverse viewpoints. Music is the soul of SXSW, and it has long been our legacy. We fully respect the decision these artists made to exercise their right to free speech.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n The SXSW statement went on to say: \u201cThe Army\u2019s sponsorship is a part of our commitment to bring forward ideas that help shape our world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The boycotting artists include the Irish rap group Kneecap, which recently was at the Sundance Film Festival starring in a film about their lives that was later picked up by Sony Pictures Classics. Other boycotting performers include Lambrini Girls, Squirrel Flower and Sprints, among others.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe cannot in good conscience<\/a> attend an arts festival that has the U.S. Army as a \u2018super sponsor\u2019 and is platforming RTX (formerly Raytheon), Collins Aerospace and BAE Systems, the very companies selling the weapons that have murdered 31,000 Palestinians, over 21,000 of them women and children,\u201d Kneecap says in a post on X.<\/a><\/p>\n
