Shaggy\u2018s distinct voice has undoubtedly played a role in his success over the years \u2013 but fans were recently shocked to learn that it was actually just an act.<\/p>\n

In a clip of an interview shared to the dancehall star\u2019s TikTok page on Friday (March 8), he spoke in his real, much more subdued voice as he explained that his famous accent was developed during his time in the military.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got this voice by mocking drill instructors in the military,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause in the Marines, the drill instructors would go, \u2018Yeah boy, drop and give me 20. Let\u2019s go.\u2019 And I would mock him as a form of joking because it motivated, you know, your platoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

He admitted he sang in that voice on his 1993 single \u201cOh Carolina\u201d because \u201cit sounded cool\u201d \u2014 but he was then beholden to it because the track became his breakout hit.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Oh Carolina\u2019 blew up and now I\u2019m faced with the situation that I\u2019m gonna have to sing every song like that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Fans in the comments of Shaggy\u2019s TikTok post were quite shocked, joking that he\u2019s been \u201cgaslighting\u201d them for decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we all just hearing shaggy real voice for the first time?\u201d one person wrote.<\/p>\n

Someone else said: \u201cNot Shaggy gas lighting us all these years,\u201d while another person added: \u201cHOLD UP!!! Shaggy DOESNT HAVE AN ACCENT.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other Shaggy news<\/a>, he recently revealed he turned down an opportunity to be on Rihanna\u2019s album (that has yet to materialize) during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey app<\/a>roached me for the Rihanna project, yeah,\u201d Shaggy told the Daily Star<\/a><\/em> in 2020.\u201dThere\u2019s a lot of great people involved, but for me, I didn\u2019t need to audition to be on the record, I\u2019ll leave that to younger guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while it may have been pushed to the wayside in lieu of her back to back pregnancies, among other things, Shaggy said he liked what he heard at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom what I hear it should be good,\u201d he said regarding the highly anticipated LP.<\/p>\n

Rihanna reportedly worked with a number of popular Jamaican artists on the project. The album was targeted for a December 2019 release but clearly, many years have passed since then with no album to report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
