Students looking to make a difference through undergraduate and graduate research projects are finding that environment at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sr.studiostack.com\/c\/link?l=1552569&amp;s=1552567\">Thompson Rivers University<\/a> (TRU).<\/p>\n<p>One of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sr.studiostack.com\/c\/link?l=1552573&amp;s=1552567\">Canada\u2019s Top 50 research universities<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sr.studiostack.com\/c\/link?l=1552575&amp;s=1552567\">TRU is a thriving research hub<\/a> with a broad spectrum of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sr.studiostack.com\/c\/link?l=1552577&amp;s=1552567\">services<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sr.studiostack.com\/c\/link?l=1552583&amp;s=1552567\">facilities<\/a>. The project supported local food programs through the development of community gardens and affordable greenhouse <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>. \u201cWhile community members have so much land-based knowledge to foster a rich co-learning experience for the horticulture students,\u201d he says, \u201cthis is a case where students have unique skill sets to offer, which contribute to capacity-building at the community level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at TRU are afforded a multitude of opportunities for those types of invaluable collaborative, co-operative and consultative projects. \u201cThere\u2019s tremendous opportunity for students to take interdisciplinary <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roaches to research rather than be siloed within their specific discipline,\u201d says Joel Wood, an associate professor and the program co-ordinator for TRU\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sr.studiostack.com\/c\/link?l=1552589&amp;s=1552567\">master of environmental economics and management<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sr.studiostack.com\/c\/link?l=1552591&amp;s=1552567\">master of science in environmental economics and management<\/a> programs.<\/p>\n<p>Wood and his student teams focus largely on environmental sustainability and policy. \u201c[We\u2019re] evaluating the benefits and costs of environmental policies, and looking at trends and relationships in economic and environmental variables,\u201d he explains. But \u201csustainability\u201d can take many forms, and Wood cites a recent master\u2019s research project\u2014<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sr.studiostack.com\/c\/link?l=1552593&amp;s=1552567\">investigating the relationship between rent increases and homelessness<\/a>\u2014as particularly significant in this regard. \u201cThe student examined data from the United States and found that, in a hypothetical scenario, a $100 increase in monthly rent leads to an additional 370 people experiencing homelessness,\u201d says Wood. \u201cGiven the large increases in rent experienced across Canada recently, research on this topic is incredibly important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Grow with graduate studies.\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D83IliggyI8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Florriann Fehr, an associate professor in TRU\u2019s school of nursing, is conducting research into the use of medical cannabis in addiction recovery, and for neurodiverse and medically diverse children. She notes the importance of TRU\u2019s mutually beneficial research environment for both students <em>and<\/em> faculty. \u201cI\u2019ve been lucky enough to have my students work with me on my community-research projects that investigate ways to advocate for people with substance-use disorders and examine the challenges of using medical cannabis as a harm-reduction strategy,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Through research conducted at TRU, one of Fehr\u2019s students co-authored a peer-reviewed paper on the barriers to access cannabidiol as a treatment option for children with neuro-diverse disabilities, while another student explored bullying dynamics in emergency departments in B.C. \u201cWe\u2019re currently in the final stages of that research and have already presented the model at a provincial level,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of a student\u2019s field of study, Mason believes TRU\u2019s regionally important but global-in-reach programs are one of its greatest assets as a research destination. \u201cI think it\u2019s an ideal place for young researchers to grow, shape their careers and contribute to meaningful change,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the exciting research taking place at TRU across its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sr.studiostack.com\/c\/link?l=1552587&amp;s=1552567\">nine graduate programs<\/a>, visit <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sr.studiostack.com\/c\/link?l=1552569&amp;s=1552567\">tru.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async defer crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
