\n BBC Studios on Wednesday unveiled that it has acquired Spanish producer Brutal Media<\/a>, adding another banner to its growing production network. The U.K. public broadcaster\u2019s commercial arm said the deal will enable it \u201cto respond to the increased app<\/a>etite for BBC content from Spanish audiences and support Brutal Media\u2019s ambitions to export original creative IP from Spain to the wider international market.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Financial terms weren\u2019t disclosed.<\/p>\n

\n Brutal Media founders Raimon Masllorens and N\u00e8lida Sanchez will continue to lead the local team. BBC Studios\u2019 Isabel Dur\u00e1n, format sales director for the region, will transition to the new position of head of entertainment within the Brutal Media team.<\/p>\n

\n Under the agreement, Brutal Media will \u201ccontinue to develop and market its slate of original IP in Spain as well as producing local adaptations of the unscripted and scripted formats in the BBC Studios catalog,\u201d the companies said. BBC Studios will distribute and produce Brutal Media formats outside of Spain.<\/p>\n

\n The deal brings the total number of markets in which BBC Studios has a production base to 12 and supports its ambition to double the size of its 2021\/2022 business by 2027\/2028.\u00a0Earlier this week, BBC Studios Productions Australia acquired Werner Film Productions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n Founded in 2009, Brutal Media has \u201ca proven track record of producing hit shows for global streamers and local broadcasters in the unscripted and scripted space,\u201d BBC Studios said. Its recent work includes the Netflix miniseries<\/a> Asalto Al Banco Central<\/em>,\u00a0The Academy<\/em>\u00a0(Sony Pictures Television),\u00a0Vintage<\/em> (3cat), film\u00a0Killer Book Club\u00a0<\/em>(Netflix), series\u00a0Welcome to Eden<\/em>\u00a0(Netflix) and\u00a0The Hockey\u00a0<\/em>Girls (Netflix, 3Cat), as well as documentaries\u00a0The End of the Storm<\/em>\u00a0(Sky TV, Liverpool FC) and\u00a0Murder by the Coast<\/em>\u00a0(Netflix), and romantic comedy\u00a0I Love You Stupid<\/em>\u00a0(Netflix).<\/p>\n

\n Brutal Media\u2019s portfolio also includes original formats\u00a0This Is Opera<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0This Is Art,<\/em>\u00a0which both aired in more than 70 territories. It has also produced\u00a0This Is Philosophy<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Opera In Jeans<\/em>, as well as primetime family-oriented factual shows\u00a0El Paisano<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0El Foraster<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n BBC Studios\u00a0said it has successfully licensed formats into Spain for a number of years and has had \u201cconsiderable success with unscripted formats over the past 12 months, with brands such as\u00a0Dancing With the Stars, The Great Bake Off, The 1% Club, Bridge of Lies, MoneyBags<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Greats<\/em>\u00a0launching across the major Spanish networks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n Said Jacob de Boer, executive vp, global entertainment at BBC Studios: \u201cThis agreement with Brutal Media is the natural next step for BBC Studios to expand our presence in the Spanish market. \n Brutal Media founders Masllorens and Sanchez said that BBC Studios\u2019 catalog \u201coffers us new and exciting opportunities, in both scripted and non-scripted content.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n And Matt Forde, managing director, global entertainment at BBC Studios Productions, said: \u201cTogether with the announcement earlier this week about Werner Film Productions in Australia, bringing\u00a0Brutal Media into our award-winning production network is testament to our commitment to supporting the world\u2019s best local creative talent, identifying complementary expertise in some of the world\u2019s most dynamic media markets and showcasing it to our partners and audiences on a global stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The BBC Studios Global Entertainment production network now has bases in the U.K., Australia, France, Germany, India, South Africa, the Nordics and the U.S. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
