\n Police fired tear gas and pepper balls at the biggest protest so far in upstate New York over the death of Daniel Prude \u2014 with at least three cops injured and nine people arrested by early Sunday.<\/p>\n

At least 1,500 protesters took to the streets of Rochester Saturday for the fourth night of protests since disturbing video emerged of 29-year-old Prude\u2019s death in March that will now be investigated by a grand jury.<\/p>\n

After marching on City Hall, protesters set off commercial-grade fireworks, with many putting on helmets and bringing a line of shields to stop advancing cops, police said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers remained steadfast while being hit with bottles and ordering the crowd to disperse,\u201d the force said in a statement.<\/p>\n

But after being met with repeated refusals to move, police eventually \u201cdeployed pepper balls and tear gas\u201d at 10:26 p.m., the force said.<\/p>\n

Three officers were \u201ctreated at local hospitals for injuries sustained as a result of projectiles and incendiary devices which were launched against them,\u201d Lt. Greg Bello told the Democrat & Chronicle.<\/p>\n

By early Sunday, there had also been at least nine arrests, including two on felonies, the paper said.<\/p>\n

Dallas Williams-Smothers, 20, was charged with first-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree rioting. Adam Green, 20, was charged with second-degree assault against an officer and unlawful assembly.<\/p>\n

It was not immedia<\/a>tely clear if the protesters were either locals or had travel<\/a>ed for the protests, the paper noted.<\/p>\n

Seven people ranging in age from 19 to 62 were charged with unlawful assembly, a misdemeanor, the Democrat & Chronicle said.<\/p>\n

The march was organized by \u201cblack liberation\u201d group, Free The People Roc. The previous night, 11 people had been arrested.<\/p>\n

No official account of injuries to protesters was offered, but social media was full of reports from people complaining about the heavy-handed police response.<\/p>\n

They included Monroe County Legislator Rachel Barnhart, who posted a video of police in riot gear \u201cmoments before I was shot in the head with a pepper ball.\u201d<\/p>\n

The protests were sparked by the release bodycam footage that showed Prude, naked and handcuffed, being covered with a \u201cspit hood\u201d and having his face into the pavement for two minutes.<\/p>\n

Prude died March 30 after he was taken off life support.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
