Ton-for-ton, more of it is laid down every year than steel, wood, plastics, and aluminium combined. Problem is, cement production emits 8% of global CO2 \u2014 four times that of air <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swedish startup Cemvision has devised a cement making process that utilises by-products from industries like steel and mining instead of fresh limestone, resulting in a circular, cleaner alternative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re on track to producing cement that emits 95% less carbon than traditional methods while remaining just as strong and potentially even faster-drying,\u201d Oscar H\u00e5ll\u00e9n, CEO of Cemvision, told TNW.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When limestone is heated in a kiln, calcium carbonate breaks down into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. Around 60% of the cement industry\u2019s total emissions are a result of this process. Today most kilns are powered by coal, oil, and natural gas. In the EU, some even <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/zerowasteeurope.eu\/library\/burning-waste-in-cement-kilns-the-case-of-lafarge-trbovlje\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burn rubbish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cemvision\u2019s demo plant in Poland, which came online in mid-2023, produces 4,000 ton of cement a year and is powered by biofuel. In December it signed up its first client, Swedish mining giant LKAB.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H\u00e5ll\u00e9n says that with incoming regulations like the EU\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which takes effect in 2026, the industry is feeling the pressure to clean up its act. Cement users are also demanding greener options.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H\u00e5ll\u00e9n also says that the company\u2019s cement can simply \u201cdrop-in\u201d to existing infrastructure, enabling rapid adoption. Moreover, its product is just as strong and durable as normal cement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike most green cement startups which partner up with bigger cement companies to bring their product to market, Cemvision is looking to sell directly to consumers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This could be construction companies, renewable energy developers \u2014 basically any industry that uses cement. Globally, that market is worth around $400bn, so there\u2019s plenty of room for growth.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCemvision\u2019s potential is nothing short of extraordinary \u2014 it\u2019s poised to lead the net-zero cement game,\u201d said Juan Nieto, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> partner at US-based Zacua Ventures, a construction-tech focussed VC that co-led the seed round alongside\u00a0 Polar Structure and Backing Minds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith a top-notch team bringing serious industry chops and a fresh take on decarbonisation of cement, they\u2019re primed to shake things up big time,\u201d Nieto added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cemvision was founded in 2020 by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claes Kollberg, Paul Sandberg, and Marcus Olsson, all with a background in the cement industry.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In 2022, the startup secured \u20ac2.5mn in a pre-seed round led by Bill Gates\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Norrsken, and EQT.\u00a0<\/span>\n                        <\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
