{"id":613777,"date":"2024-03-22T06:09:09","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T03:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/kansas-moves-towards-restricting-dei-in-public-universities\/"},"modified":"2024-03-22T06:09:09","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T03:09:09","slug":"kansas-moves-towards-restricting-dei-in-public-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/kansas-moves-towards-restricting-dei-in-public-universities\/","title":{"rendered":"#Kansas moves towards restricting DEI in public universities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/AP24080800722836.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Kansas House on Thursday passed a bill to restrict diversity-oriented hiring practices at Kansas universities, making the Sunflower State the latest to try to limit DEI initiatives in educational settings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kslegislature.org\/li\/b2023_24\/measures\/documents\/hb2460_01_0000.pdf\">The bill<\/a>\u00a0passed in the Kansas House of Representatives in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kslegislature.org\/li\/b2023_24\/measures\/vote_view\/je_20240321113544_084804\/\">an 81-39 vote<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday, with five lawmakers absent from the vote. The bill would prevent the state\u2019s universities, community colleges or technical colleges from using diversity, equity or inclusion consideration in their admissions, student aid and hiring decisions.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The bill also would prohibit postsecondary educational institutes from basing admissions, educational aid or employment decisions on any statement about \u201cpolitical ideology or movement\u201d the candidate may provide. Universities would also be banned from requesting or requiring such statements.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The vote comes nearly a week after the Kansas Senate moved forward with a proposed $25 billion state budget, which features a provision to force universities to eliminate DEI requirements and mandatory DEI training,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/diversity-equity-inclusion-universities-ban-kansas-69ba2c0492944b76772353289e565b19\">The Associated Press reported<\/a>.\u00a0The state\u2019s six universities would need to report they have eliminated these requirements to receive certain funding, the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> wire added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The provision will be discussed among negotiators during the final budget draft processes, per The AP.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of a merit-based <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach, universities have chosen to embrace ideologies that discriminate against people who do not hew to their orthodoxy,\u201d State Rep. Steven Howe, the Republican lawmaker behind the legislation, said\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cmE1icTeNd0\">during a House proceeding<\/a>\u00a0Wednesday. \u201cThis legislation prohibits all loyalty oaths, litmus tests without regard to viewpoint or ideology.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Calling it \u201cconstitutionally sound,\u201d Howe said the legislation is \u201cprotective\u201d of students and faculty rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The proposed legislation would also permit the state attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> to impose fines of up to $10,000 on schools that do not comply with the rules, per the bill text.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The definition of DEI is not clearly defined in the measure, some Kansas lawmakers argued, per the AP. Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins (R) pushed back on this, claiming the bill would instead create a basic test \u2014 if a university requires ideological statements from candidates \u2014 to avoid definition confusion, the news wire added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Republican leaders in nearly two dozen states have sought to restrict DEI initiatives in schools,\u00a0including in Alabama,\u00a0where the state\u2019s Republican-led Legislature passed a measure this week to ban state funding of DEI programs at public universities, local boards of education and government agencies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At least 22 states have introduced legislation surrounding DEI efforts at universities as of July 2023, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Texas and Florida colleges have started\u00a0terminating DEI positions\u00a0and Florida state colleges\u00a0are prohibited from using state or federal money to fund DEI programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2024 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
