\n Filming for Euphoria<\/em> season three has been put on hold. <\/p>\n

\n The Sam Levinson drama was expected to start production soon on its long-awaited new season. But that plan has changed to give Levinson more time to work on the dark teen drama\u2019s script<\/a>s. <\/p>\n

\n In addition, the show\u2019s cast \u2014 which includes Dune: Part Two<\/em> star Zendaya and Anyone But You<\/em> star Sydney Sweeney \u2014 is being allowed to purpose other opportunities. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cHBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,\u201d HBO said in a statement. \u201cIn the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n That said, the cast has not been released from their contracts, and HBO still intends to get Euphoria<\/em> season three on the air sometime in 2025. <\/p>\n

\n In an with Elle<\/a><\/em> for Zendaya\u2019s September 2023 cover story, Levinson had teased the new season as a \u201cfilm noir,\u201d saying Zendaya\u2019s character Rue will \u201cexplore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n The acclaimed Euphoria<\/em> is one of HBO\u2019s top-rated series<\/a>. Euphoria<\/em>\u00a0last aired in February 2022 and suffered the death of star Angus Cloud, who died July 2023 at age 25. The show was renewed for a third season halfway through season two airing.<\/p>\n

\n Levinson was writing the already renewed\u00a0third season\u00a0before the May 2, 2023 writers strike,\u00a0a source had told\u00a0THR<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>at the time of Cloud\u2019s death \u2014 as the actor was a central storyline in the season two\u00a0finale. With the season halted amid the work stoppage, it was unclear what the creator had planned.<\/p>\n

\n Last year, Levinson also spent some time launching his short-lived provocative music industry drama The Idol<\/em>. <\/p>\n

\n At\u00a0an event last week, Sweeney was asked about rumors that the hit HBO show might not be coming back. She stalled by taking a sip from her water, before telling the moderator, \u201cHonestly, [talking about\u00a0Euphoria<\/em>\u00a0is] like, as scary as talking about Marvel. I said one thing, and it went everywhere.\u201d When asked if she had seen any scripts for season three, she replied, \u201cMaybe. I don\u2019t know.\u201d She was referring to another interview<\/a> earlier this month, when Sweeney hinted she expected to start start filming Euphoria<\/em> soon, telling MTV, \u201cI go into Euphoria<\/em>\u201d next. When asked if she\u2019s seen scripts she replied, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Sweeney\u2019s comments came shortly after her co-star Nika King, who plays Zendaya\u2019s onscreen mother, went viral over a stand-up clip when talking about the long gap between seasons two and three. \u201cSeason three is coming out \u2014 I don\u2019t fucking know. Don\u2019t ask me, I don\u2019t know. \u2026 \u2018We need season three!\u2019 Bitch,\u00a0I<\/em>\u00a0need season three! I haven\u2019t paid my rent in six months,\u201d she said at a Hollywood Improv performance earlier this year.<\/p>\n

\n She later clarified in\u00a0a statement to\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> that she wasn\u2019t being fully serious: \u201cMy reference about\u00a0Euphoria<\/em>\u00a0during my stand-up tour was a lighthearted joke. Most people have seen me portray serious characters on-screen but my roots are in comedy. I actually have a few film projects releasing this year that I\u2019m excited about. It\u2019s a blessing to craft a career in both drama and comedy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n In November 2023, HBO chief Casey Bloys had revealed that\u00a0Euphoria<\/em>\u00a0was among the HBO series to have been pushed to 2025 due to the dual Hollywood strikes.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
