{"id":614287,"date":"2024-03-26T03:05:41","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T00:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/gaza-ceasefire-vote-roils-us-israel-talks-on-rafah\/"},"modified":"2024-03-26T03:05:41","modified_gmt":"2024-03-26T00:05:41","slug":"gaza-ceasefire-vote-roils-us-israel-talks-on-rafah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/gaza-ceasefire-vote-roils-us-israel-talks-on-rafah\/","title":{"rendered":"#Gaza ceasefire vote roils US-Israel talks on Rafah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/International-Bibi_010324_Reuters_Ronen-Zvulun.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The already tense relationship between the U.S. and Israel further deteriorated Monday with the passage of the United Nations Security Council cease-fire resolution, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cancel a high-level delegation meant to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> to Washington this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu and his radical right-wing coalition were roiled after the U.S. abstained from a vote of the U.N. Security Council proposal calling for a ceasefire in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, allowing the measure to pass. The Israeli prime minister in recent weeks has also publicly\u00a0seethed\u00a0over what he says is a bid by the White House and Congressional Democrats to kneecap his political standing inside his own country. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>White House spokesperson John Kirby said the White House was \u201cdis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed\u201d and \u201cperplexed\u201d by Netanyahu\u2019s response but tried to play down the rift, insisting that the countries\u2019 relationship has not hit a new low and that U.S. policy had not changed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are two leaders who have known each other for going on now four decades, and they haven\u2019t in the past agreed on everything and they don\u2019t agree on everything right now,\u201d Kirby said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Israel\u2019s reaction reflects an ever-growing divide between the two steadfast allies, a relationship that is already soured ahead of a planned Israeli offensive into Gaza\u2019s southernmost city\u00a0Rafah, a military move American officials have warned against. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The canceled delegation was intended to discuss Israel\u2019s plans for Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians are sheltering after a brutal Israeli air and ground campaign has forced tens of thousands of people to flee northern parts of the enclave. White House officials have said that a ground invasion of the city without an accepted plan would create a humanitarian disaster.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think that a ground invasion, especially without any type of credible plan, is a mistake, given the large number of people, displaced people that are there at the moment,\u201d Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters Monday.\u00a0\u201cThere are ways to go about addressing the threat of Hamas while also taking into account civilian safety.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But after the U.S. declined to veto the U.N. Security Council resolution \u2013 which also called for\u00a0the im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te release of all of the more than 130 hostages\u00a0Hamas had taken \u2013 Netanyahu\u2019s office released a statement calling Washington\u2019s abstention \u201ca clear retreat\u201d from its previous position and one that would hurt efforts to fight Hamas in Gaza and to free hostages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>As a consequence, the Israeli delegation meant to discuss Rafah would not go to Washington, he added. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Far-right elements of Israel\u2019s government also released\u00a0testy responses, with Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir calling the U.N. vote \u201cproof that President Biden is not prioritizing Israel and the free world\u2019s victory over terrorism, but rather his own political considerations,\u201d as reported by The New York Times. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the U.S., which had previously vetoed three other resolutions calling for a cease-fire, rejected those claims.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe prime minister\u2019s office seems to be indicating through public statements that we somehow changed here. We haven\u2019t,\u201d Kirby said at the White House daily briefing Monday. \u201cAnd we get to decide what our policy is. It seems like the prime minister\u2019s office is choosing to create a perception of daylight here when they don\u2019t need to do that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller called the withdrawn delegation \u201csurprising and unfortunate,\u201d seeing as the United States had ahead notified Israel\u2019s government they were planning to abstain from voting on the resolution. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/03\/25\/netanyahu-biden-white-house-crisis-israel-politics\">Multiple outlets<\/a> reported that the White House told Netanyahu\u2019s aides in discussions Sunday that the U.S. abstention wasn\u2019t a change in policy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Both Kirby and Miller also repeatedly stressed to reporters that the resolution is \u201cnon-binding.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, Washington\u2019s choice is the most pointed action to date at the U.N. against Israel, which Biden and other top U.S. officials have said needs to do more to prevent civilian casualties and allow more aid into Gaza since the start of the war in October. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>American officials believe Netanyahu\u2019s public displeasure with the U.S. is manufactured for domestic purposes, Axios reported, citing unnamed U.S. officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAll of that is self-defeating. The Prime Minister could have chosen a different course \u2014 to align with the U.S. on the meaning of this resolution.\u00a0He chose not to, apparently for political purposes,\u201d a U.S. official <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/03\/25\/netanyahu-biden-white-house-crisis-israel-politics\">told the outlet<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Several U.S. lawmakers on Monday also took a dig at Israel\u2019s decision to forego talks,\u00a0with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) tweeting that Netanyahu is \u201cnot so upset that he\u2019ll turn down $3.3B in taxpayer dollars to fund his immoral war,\u201d referring to the annual lethal aid the U.S. provides the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant\u00a0is already in Washington and is still expected to meet with national security adviser Jake Sullivan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, according to the White House.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Ryder also confirmed that Austin and Gallant\u2019s meeting is still on the books. The two are expected to meet at the Pentagon to discuss\u00a0the release of the hostages, Israeli operations\u00a0in Gaza and the need to ensure the safety of civilians sheltering in Rafah, he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2024 Nexstar Media Inc.
