You could argue that many top 20\u201330 rankings do bode well for the future. However, without topical authority, you\u2019ll always face an uphill battle to deliver on the long-term ROI you\u2019ll need to justify all the time, effort and expense it\u2019s realistically gonna take.<\/li>\n<li>The second issue comes down to organic click-through rates. On average, the top five positions get <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.advancedwebranking.com\/free-seo-tools\/google-organic-ctr\">~70-80%<\/a> of all clicks. This means getting stuck ranking outside the top five might only net you a fraction of the clicks you\u2019ll actually need to drive 7+-figure customer acquisition.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ranking in the top 10 is a nice start.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not good enough because position 10 probably gets the same sliver of traffic that position 20, 30 or 100+ might \u2013 which is zero. <\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s a bad sign \u2013 especially when combined with these next few problems.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-problem-2-your-good-content-isn-t-actually-aligned-with-what-searchers-actually-want\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Problem_2_Your_%E2%80%98good_content_isnt_actually_aligned_with_what_searchers_actually_want\"><\/span>Problem 2: Your \u2018good\u2019 content isn\u2019t actually aligned with what searchers actually want.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Big brands catch all the breaks.<\/p>\n<p>They can publish mediocre content on their giant site and typically do \u201cpretty well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone else? Can\u2019t. (None of that surface-level AI garbage).<\/p>\n<p>It might be full of the technical babel-speak your ICPs adore.<\/p>\n<p>But, it ain\u2019t gonna rank as-is! Not likely and not anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>So, while it might be \u201cgood enough\u201d for top 20 right now, that\u2019s in no way a guarantee it\u2019s ever gonna see the top coveted positions 3-5 that actually deliver 80%+ of results for this keyword.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-problem-3-keyword-cannibalization-means-on-page-optimization-is-off-too\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Problem_3_Keyword_cannibalization_means_on-page_optimization_is_off_too\"><\/span>Problem 3: Keyword cannibalization means on-page optimization is off, too<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Analyzing underperforming content with a balanced scorecard will im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely make some of these problems more obvious.<\/p>\n<p>Because when you lack topical authority (little-to-no top five rankings) and have search intent + content mismatch issues, you\u2019ll often also see keyword cannibalization (or \u201cpretty good\u201d rankings for a relevant keyword that makes it seem like you\u2019re on the right track, yet will almost always hold you back long-term).<\/p>\n<p>This is a bad sign.<\/p>\n<p>Because <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly speaking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When you\u2019re writing and optimizing a single piece of content for a specific keyword or topic.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>You (should) be covering semantically related subtopics, related questions and additional content types (images or video) specific to those keywords or topics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So even if you have one piece of content picking up multiple \u201cpretty good\u201d keyword rankings, you\u2019re highly unlikely to ever rank well enough (top five) for those additional keywords. It should be immediately obvious already.<\/p>\n<p>Search is a zero-sum <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>. For you to win, others have to lose. That means you need to unseat these competitors. (See \u201cProblem 1\u201d above.)<\/p>\n<p>And so what are the chances of doing just that, on this SERP, with these competitors? Especially if you\u2019re <strong>not<\/strong> already a giant brand (household category leader + DR 90+)?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Slim to none. Or next to impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, it\u2019s a terrible SERP to compete for most mortal brands.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And yet, we\u2019re still not done unpacking this SERP competition angle just yet, either.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-problem-5-the-quality-and-quantity-of-referring-domains-are-out-of-your-league\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Problem_5_The_quality_and_quantity_of_referring_domains_are_out_of_your_league\"><\/span>Problem 5: The quality and quantity of referring domains are out of your league<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s put all these problems together.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s usually not just one reason you\u2019re not ranking in the top five. They\u2019re a decent jumping-off point.<\/p>\n<p>But they\u2019re <strong>not<\/strong> always a good sign that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You\u2019re on the right track.<\/li>\n<li>Your SEO + content strategy is going to work long-term.<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s still not a ton of distribution required to drive results anytime soon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pretty good rankings are like a mirage.<\/p>\n<p>They seem nice on the surface.
