The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/feature-story\/emergency-response-effort-endangered-sawfish\" data-ylk=\"slk:said Wednesday;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">said Wednesday<\/a> that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission had received reports of \u201cabnormal fish behavior, including spinning and whirling\u201d affecting roughly 40 species of fish, and that there had also been reports of fish deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns center on the smalltooth sawfish, a species that is part of the ray family and known for its long, flat nose, which is accentuated by sharp teeth and looks much like a saw (hence the name). It is listed by NOAA as an endangered species, and was \u201cthe first marine fish to receive federal protection,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/species\/smalltooth-sawfish\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to the agency;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">according to the agency<\/a>. Sawfish can grow up to 16 feet in length.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the bizarre behavior and deaths remains undetermined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a mystery,\u201d said Adam Brame, the sawfish recovery coordinator for the National Marine Fisheries Service, a part of NOAA. \u201cOur partners are working around the clock to try to reach a decision on what has caused this fish health event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gregg Furstenwerth, a diver and underwater photographer in the Florida Keys, has been documenting the trend, which he said he first noticed last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my lifetime of dives, I\u2019ve never seen any behavior like this from fish at all,\u201d Furstenwerth said.<\/p>\n<p>NOAA said that it will initiate an emergency response effort next week in an attempt to save sawfish. A spokesperson said that a majority of the company\u2019s animal care team will help with the effort, including by transporting sawfish to its Marine <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> Research Centers and caring for them.<\/p>\n<p>The Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium said in a release that it, too, is eager to help, with quarantine facilities ready for rescued sawfish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttempts to solve this mystery call for robust collaboration,\u201d said Kathryn Flowers, a Mote postdoctoral research fellow and the lead scientist for the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The issue is affecting many kinds of fish off Florida\u2019s coast, according to Dean Grubbs, the associate director of research at Florida State University\u2019s coastal and marine laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been species all the way from the very small bait type fish, like pin fish, all the way up to things like groupers and even some stingrays,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 932px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:75%\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"A smalltooth sawfish (NOAA via AP)\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/9Zh_gkKPgawbZBNxi1_rKg--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTEyNDI7aD05MzI-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_nbc_universal_184\/62a430c778570d7f4b0a799b3661d485\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A smalltooth sawfish (NOAA via AP)\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/9Zh_gkKPgawbZBNxi1_rKg--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTEyNDI7aD05MzI-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_nbc_universal_184\/62a430c778570d7f4b0a799b3661d485\" class=\"caas-img\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"caption-collapse\">A smalltooth sawfish (NOAA via AP)<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>There are some theories about what\u2019s h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening, Brame said, but it\u2019s difficult to arrive at a quick answer in these types of events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo some degree, I\u2019ve heard it described as trying to find a needle in a haystack,\u201d he said. \u201cBut there\u2019s so many different possibilities that it\u2019s really difficult to isolate which one it could be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/myfwc.com\/research\/saltwater\/health\/spinningevent\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:said on Wednesday;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"> said on Wednesday<\/a> that it had found evidence to rule out some potential causes. The fish did not appear to be suffering from a communicable disease or bacterial infection, it said, and other factors like oxygen, salinity and temperature were not suspected to be factors, either.<\/p>\n<p>The commission\u2019s hotline for sawfish sightings, which has been around for years, has seen an uptick in calls over the last month.<\/p>\n<p>Sea Mckeon, director of marine programs at the American Bird Conservancy, said his organization is monitoring the fish situation closely as well, but it has not yet seen a link to any bird mortality. To help scientists figure out the underlying causes, he said, members of the public can record instances of strange fish behavior that they see out on the water, and upload videos or photos to community science sites like iNaturalist.org.<\/p>\n<p>Grubbs said the issue seems to have gotten worse since February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s extremely distressing to see these sawfish dying, as we\u2019ve spent the last 15 years studying them,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s hard. It\u2019s hard on my students to see it, my graduate students \u2014 it\u2019s definitely distressing.
