\n Hunter Schafer said this week she\u2019d like to shift the public\u2019s focus away from her trans identity. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI just want to be a girl and finally move on,\u201d the Euphoria<\/em> star said in a new GQ<\/a><\/em> cover story, adding that she\u2019s even hesitant to say the word \u201ctrans\u201d in interviews. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cAs soon as I say it, it gets blastoff,\u201d she said. \u201cIt took a while to learn that, and it also took a while to learn that I don\u2019t want to be [reduced to] that, and I find it ultimately demeaning to me and what I want to do. Especially after high school, I was sick of talking about it. I worked so hard to get to where I am, past these really hard points in my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n In high school, Schafer was highly publicized for being the youngest plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging North Carolina\u2019s House Bill 2, which banned trans people from using public bathrooms that didn\u2019t match the gender on their birth certificate. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI felt like I had to make my art a response to everything that was happ<\/a>ening in North Carolina when that\u2019s not really what I wanted to be making art about, necessarily,\u201d she said, reflecting on her work as a visual artist and fashion designer, as well as actress and model. \u201cI think I felt like, Oh, I\u2019m trans. I should be making art about this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The shift away from that focus has been very intentional for Schafer. \u201cIt has not just happened naturally by any means,\u201d she said. \u201cIf I let it happen, it would still be giving \u2018Transsexual Actress\u2019 before every article ever.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Elsewhere in the profile, the actress also opened up about her grief following the death of fellow Euphoria<\/em> actor Angus Cloud, who died last summer at age 25 from an accidental drug overdose. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019ve never had a friend that I was that close to and that was my age pass before,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s really surreal. It doesn\u2019t make sense. And yeah, it\u2019s new. It\u2019s a new kind of grieving.<\/p>\n

\n Schafer added that Cloud had been \u201creally one of the heartbeats of\u00a0Euphoria.<\/em>\u00a0It\u2019s always the people that are just kind of a little too good for the world and a little too pure. He was a fucking angel. He was sunshine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
