\n Labor Day was once the nation\u2019s most blatantly political national holiday \u2014 created by the trade-union movement to celebrate the right of working people to bargain collectively and to stage strikes to press their demands.<\/p>\n

The Post was an early and vigorous supporter of the movement. As early as 1836, editor William Cullen Bryant wrote: \u201cStrike the right of associating for the sale of labor from the privileges of a freeman, and you may as well at once bind him to a master.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even before Congress created the federal holiday in 1894, New York hosted the nation\u2019s first Labor Day parade when 10,000 workers took off from their jobs to march from City Hall to Union Square. As the movement grew, so did the parades and celebrations.<\/p>\n

But times have changed. Today, Labor Day is largely an occasion for sales, end-of-summer cookouts and back-to-school preparations. Why? Because the movement has sharply diminished and dramatically changed.<\/p>\n

In 1954, more than one in three American workers was a union member. Today, it\u2019s less than one in 15 private-sector workers \u2014 but, in a huge shift, more than one-third of public-sector workers. Indeed, nearly half of all union members today work for government.<\/p>\n

Yet even as pro-union a president as Franklin Delano Roosevelt \u2014 who did more than any other chief executive to extend organized labor\u2019s reach \u2014 was certain that unions had no place in government service. As he wrote in 1937: \u201cAll government workers should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service.\u201d<\/p>\n

And strikes by public employees, he wrote, are \u201cunthinkable and intolerable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The way FDR\u2019s warning has gone by the wayside is probably a major reason why public support for unions is way down \u2014 and why huge Labor Day parades are a distant memory.<\/p>\n

But a day of thanks and a public salute still is due to all those working men and women who \u2014 in the words of one of the holiday\u2019s originators, AFL co-founder Peter McGuire \u2014 \u201cfrom rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nAnd breezes soft with music roll.
<\/br>
\nHe lives where simple wishes throng,
<\/br>
\nAnd give contentment to his breast,
<\/br>
\nWhile tender lullabies of song
<\/br>
\nBring angel gladness to his rest;
<\/br>
\nNo praises linger o\u2019er his name
<\/br>
\nWhere he in silence works apart,
<\/br>
\nAnd honor never links with fame
<\/br>
\nThe modest glories of his heart.
<\/br>
\nHe needs no kiss of royal crown
<\/br>
\nTo wield the axe or guide the plow,
<\/br>
\nOr woo the smiles of heaven down
<\/br>
\nTo cling in clusters on his brow;
<\/br>
\nBut in the sacred shine of love,
<\/br>
\nWith humble deeds he lives his days,
<\/br>
\nAnd, drinking from the founts above,
<\/br>
\nHe scatters gladness o\u2019er his ways.

\nProud monarch of the tattered vest,
<\/br>
\nThy toil is fraught with greater gains
<\/br>
\nThan his that bleeds where warrior crest
<\/br>
\nSlays thousands on the battled plains!
<\/br>
\nThy duty prompts to build, to grow,
<\/br>
\nThe forest fell, the city plan
<\/br>
\nAnd scatter seeds of love below,
