For every story of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le Watch saving someone\u2019s life<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there\u2019s a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theranos<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out there ruining it for everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet the sector marches on. We all want to be healthy and know more about our bodies \u2014 and this is an opportunity for profit that tech companies can\u2019t ignore. The problem is that, as consumers, we struggle to separate the wheat from the chaff, the hard <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> from the cosmetic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take, for example, the heart monitoring features on popular wearables like the Apple Watch or the Fitbit Charge. These are useful tools for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> awareness of heart health, but <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41569-021-00522-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies have shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they\u2019re not accurate enough for clinical use and any data they collect \u201cshould be interpreted with caution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t to say that today\u2019s wearables can\u2019t be of some use, just that they cannot be completely trusted. A Finnish startup called CardioSignal wants to buck this trend, and states it can detect heart disease using only a phone. Intrigued, I got in touch with Juuso Blomster, the company\u2019s CEO, to find out more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_CardioSignal_story\"><\/span><strong>The CardioSignal story<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our conversation, Blomster tells me that CardioSignal has its roots in academia, specifically the University of Turku, a Finnish education institution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blomster is a clinical cardiologist by trade, having practised for close to 20 years. The seed of CardioSignal was planted around 2011, a period he spent in Australia. He tells TNW it was at this time he started to see wearables first make waves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sort of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> \u2014 with the Fitbit as a prime example \u2014 was steadily gaining popularity. \u201cAs a cardiologist, when I saw patients, they were interested in understanding if they could use a sports watch to track their heart health,\u201d Blomster says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concurrently, his colleagues back in Finland began testing consumer grade wearables to see what they could achieve in a health setting. They explored the possibility of using smartwatches in tracking heart health, but found it tough to take clinically accurate readings from them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFollowing this, we started looking into different types of sensors and really soon realised that if you use two common sensors [on a phone], the accelerometer and gyroscope, and place them on your chest, we can actually read your heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The motion sensors in phones evolved so quickly, became small, accurate, and sensitive enough to measure when the valves in the heart are opening and closing \u2014 something you can \u201cusually only get with a heart ultrasound.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI still remember the first time when we were comparing the ultrasound signals [to those from] the motion sensors,\u201d Blomster says. As they noticed the difference between the two were well within the margin of error (\u201creally, the same\u201d) he and his team became incredibly excited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They realised they could achieve \u201cgreat things\u201d with this technology and data.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_exactly_is_CardioSignal\"><\/span><strong>What exactly is CardioSignal?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effectively, CardioSignal is an app you load on your phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You place the handset on your chest and then, as Blomster explains, it uses the two common sensors previously mentioned to measure the motion of your heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a minute, this data is sent to a secure cloud service for analysis. From there, it\u2019s able to tell if you\u2019re suffering from <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atrial_fibrillation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atrial fibrillation (AFib)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most common cardiac rhythm disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is this like the heart monitoring tech in many smartwatches? Useful for broad understanding, but clinically useless?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nope. CardioSignal\u2019s tech has been analysed <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cardiosignal.com\/publications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in over 20 peer-reviewed publications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is validated for clinical use, and has been categorised as <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/612cd2833850b4741fea579d\/t\/64b7cd55fbfe95534cb344ef\/1689767255515\/EC+certificate+CardioSignal.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a CE class IIa medical device<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, it\u2019s the real deal. CardioSignal\u2019s is the first tech validated to detect heart disease without the need for specialised equipment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The market has taken notice. At the start of 2024, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cardiosignal.com\/news\/cardiosignal-raises-10-million-in-series-a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CardioSignal raised $10M<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the funding led by <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitxpartners.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DigiTx Partners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with participation from <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sandwater.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandwater<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/maki.vc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maki.vc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Roadblocks_and_competitors\"><\/span><strong>Roadblocks and competitors<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While CardioSignal has a lot of potential, it still has some way to go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the app and device only detects atrial fibrillation (AFib). While this is the most common cardiac rhythm disorder, it\u2019s not something the company is alone in tracking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Samsung and Apple smartwatches have the ability to detect AFib, and considering they sit on your wrist and operate in the background \u2014 rather than having to rest on your chest for a full minute \u2014 this is far more alluring to most users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I put this to Blomster, he pointed to a range of benefits CardioSignal\u2019s technology has over wearables.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe key benefit is it can directly measure your heart,\u201d he says. As it literally sits on a user\u2019s chest, it\u2019s able to directly read the heart\u2019s rhythm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most wearable devices on the other hand are, well, closer to your hand \u2014 putting them a fair distance away from the organ it\u2019s measuring. \u201cA lot of things can happen in between,\u201d Blomster says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond this, a phone can deliver a lot more information. Generally, smartwatches use a single channel of data: the pulse of an optical sensor. The two sensors on the phone that CardioSignal uses \u2014 the accelerometer and gyroscope \u2014 each provide tri-dimensional information, effectively providing six data channels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen a heart pumps there\u2019s rotation and twist,\u201d Blomster says. This means the company\u2019s ability to track movement across multiple vectors gives them terrific insight into how a heart operates.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"CardioSignals_next_steps\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>CardioSignal\u2019s next steps<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blomster tells me there\u2019s \u201congoing clinical validation\u201d for a range of other ailments too. Heart failure detection is set to come out this year in Europe, but beyond that the company plans to add detection for <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aortic_stenosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aortic stenosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coronary_artery_disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronary artery disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pulmonary_hypertension\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pulmonary artery hypertension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the near future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some downsides to the tech though. CardioSignal should be used daily, and although it only takes a minute to put it on your sternum and get results, it\u2019s not the most natural use case. This is a tradeoff CardiSignal deliberately made, wanting to make its heart monitoring tech \u201cas accessible as possible.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If people are worried and want insight into their heart \u2014 or want some control over their existing condition and need motivation to take medicine \u2014 CardioSignal can help, all without needing expensive equipment that often isn\u2019t even available at GP offices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_smartphone_as_a_modern_medical_device\"><\/span><strong>The smartphone as a modern medical device<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, CardioSignal isn\u2019t alone in utilising the humble smartphone in the health tech sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find out more about this trend, we spoke with Varun Mishra, a senior analyst at <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpointresearch.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counterpoint Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSmartphones have been consistently gaining importance through widespread use cases across personal health, wellness, [and] healthcare management,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The past several years have not only seen a variety of apps like <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.headspace.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headspace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medisafe.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medisafe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gain popularity, but the devices have also become more intimately involved in how we track our bodies. They \u201cplayed a pivotal role in getting access to doctors through video consultations especially during COVID lockdowns,\u201d and now take on a large load of medical administration, as making doctors appointments or seeing test results are now often done through phones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In regards to personal health, Mishra says that wearables now often act as an \u201cinput device,\u201d with deeper analysis done on smartphone apps themselves. This trend is rippling across the industry, with other medical devices getting increasingly smart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGlucose metres, weighing scales, BP monitors, pill dispensers, metabolism trackers or even toothbrushes are all getting connected,\u201d he says \u2014 and the smartphone operates a central hub to analyse them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CardioSignal, then, is part of a wider trend of phones becoming increasingly central to how we manage our health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_on_the_health_tech_horizon\"><\/span><strong>What\u2019s on the health tech horizon?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGoing forward, everything that can be connected will be connected,\u201d Mishra says, \u201cmore health-related devices will become smarter and rely on smartphones for interfacing with the end users.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This bodes well for a business like CardioSignal, as it means people will be comfortable with using their phone to monitor and pay attention to their health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, there are dangers to this. As more and more of our medical data moves to our phones, the danger of that information being targeted by hackers increases. The easier it is for us to access all our data, the easier it is for hackers too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, this feels like a small risk considering the broad upside of smartphone-based health applications. Phones are an ideal way of democratising the medical industry, ensuring that doctors have access to more information than ever to do their work and that we have more insight into our bodies. And, it is something that <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bankmycell.com\/blog\/how-many-phones-are-in-the-world\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost the entire globe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can benefit from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the technology matures and more doctors get involved, we may see the entire health sector shift for the better.
