The US Surgeon <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf\">recently warned<\/a> that tech can deepen isolation, increase fear of missing out, and reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> interaction. Surveys frequently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2017\/03\/06\/518362255\/feeling-lonely-too-much-time-on-social-media-may-be-why\">show<\/a> that isolation among young people surges when their social media use grows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what could possibly solve these problems caused by tech? Why, more tech of course!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a common response from (who else?) technologists, who have a remarkable variety of marketable solutions. From interactive streaming and online gaming to AI lovers and virtual friends, our generous tech lords offer countless alternatives to in-person interaction. Unfortunately, the cure is often worse than the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThose who are substituting online relationships for real relationships, unsurprisingly, don\u2019t see a reduction in loneliness and in fact may actually see a deterioration relative to people who use online interactions to supplement their face-to-face relationships,\u201d Louise Hawkley, an <span>expert on isolation,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2019\/05\/ce-corner-sidebar\"><span>told the American Psychological Association<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<p class=\"ica-text__title\">TNW Conference 2024, June 20-21 &#8211; Join our Virtual Discount Hunt this week!<\/p>\n<p>For a bit of Easter fun, we\u2019ve hidden a number of discount codes around our Conference website.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>When tech is purely assistive, however, it can demonstrably mitigate isolation.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFor older adults who use Skype to talk with their grandkids who live across the country from them, technology really can improve their sense of connectedness,\u201d Hawkley said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest attempt to find a healthy balance is <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/news\/2024-04-virtual-skin-contact-smart-textiles.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virtual hugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Designed by researchers in Germany, the system uses smart textiles to create a second skin. When someone puts on the smart fabric, they can experience the sensation of physical touch. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The developers have a noble goal: giving patients in isolation a digital hug with their loved ones. That<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could well<\/span> comfort the lonely \u2014 and create another <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symbol of our descent into digital isolation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dirty-minded among us may also imagine other <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lications for haptics that mimic human touch: sex robots. If the researchers are ever strapped for cash, they could pursue a lucrative career pivot. But then again, that market isn\u2019t living up to expectations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lonely_sex_robots\"><\/span>Lonely sex robots<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A decade ago, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/08\/18\/we_might_all_be_having_sex_with_robots_soon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew Research predicted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that sex robots \u201cwould be commonplace\u201d by 2025. With just a year left before that deadline, they\u2019re a long way from the mainstream. Sales have slowed since the pandemic and sex robot brothels have been <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation-now\/2018\/10\/03\/sex-robot-brothel-blocked-houston-texas\/1518298002\/#:~:text=Proposed%20'sex%20robot%20brothel'%20blocked%20by%20Houston%20government%3A%20',We%20are%20not%20Sin%20City'&amp;text=The%20city%20council%20of%20Houston,sex%20robot%20brothel%22%20from%20opening.\">forced to close their doors<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We may always need\u00a0real lovers, relationships \u2014 and hugs. As Professor Tania Leiman, an expert on the subject, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2023\/jan\/14\/its-2023-where-are-the-sex-robots-they-will-probably-never-be-as-huge-as-everyone-thinks\">told the Guardian<\/a> last year, there\u2019s something \u201cfundamentally human\u201d about intimate interaction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or perhaps the androids\u00a0just aren\u2019t acceptable substitutes yet? The \u201cuncanny valley\u201d is creepy enough in the lab, let alone the bedroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One day, the robots could escape that valley.
