\n Racing superstar\u00a0Lewis Hamilton is opening up about the time he passed on an opportunity to work with Tom Cruise that he still regrets today.<\/p>\n

\n The Formula One driver revealed in a recent interview with GQ<\/em> magazine<\/a> that he befriended Cruise after the actor invited him to the set of his 2014 film\u00a0Edge of Tomorrow<\/em>. The pair continued to keep in contact \u2014 which consisted of Cruise sending Hamilton encouraging messages during races \u2014 and the racer eventually asked the actor to cast him in a hypothetical Top Gun<\/em> sequel, years before Top Gun: Maverick<\/em> actually came to fruition. <\/p>\n

\n I said, \u2018Dude, if you ever do\u00a0Top Gun 2<\/em>, I will even be a janitor,\u2019\u201d Hamilton recalled telling Cruise at the time. \u201c\u2019Just let me be in it.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Once the sequel started pre-production, the F1 driver said the Mission: Impossible<\/em> star remembered his request and put Hamilton in contact with director Joseph Kosinski, who ended up offering the racer a role as one of the film\u2019s pilots.<\/p>\n

\n However, due to his busy schedule, including the 2018 title race, as well as his lack of acting experience, Hamilton said he ultimately passed on the opportunity. But he later regretted his decision once he saw the 2022 action film starring Cruise, Miles Teller and Glen Powell.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cFirstly, I hadn\u2019t even had, like, an acting lesson,\u201d he told the magazine. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t want to be the one that lets this movie down. And then secondly, I just really didn\u2019t have the time to dedicate to it. I remember having to tell Joe and Tom \u2014 and it broke my heart. And then I regretted it, naturally, when they show me the movie and it\u2019s:\u00a0It could\u2019ve been me! Oh, God, I\u2019m still\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Though the Top Gun<\/em> sequel didn\u2019t end up being the F1 star\u2019s door into Hollywood, another opportunity to work with Kosinski came shortly after. Hamilton signed on to produce the director\u2019s upcoming Formula 1 movie starring Brad Pitt to help make sure the film includes an accurate representation of the international racing league.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cMy point was: Guys, this movie needs to be\u00a0so\u00a0authentic. There\u2019s two different fan groups that we have \u2014 like, the old originals, who from the day they\u2019re born hearing the\u00a0Grand Prix\u00a0music every weekend and watching with their families, to the new generation that just\u00a0learned about it today through Netflix,\u201d Hamilton explained. \u201cI felt my job really has been to try to call BS. \u2018This would never happ<\/a>en. This is how it would be. This is how it could happen.\u2019 Just giving them advice about what racing is really about and what, as a racing fan, would appeal and what would not.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
