But now, he says he\u2019s asked the state to execute him. It\u2019s time, he says, for \u201cjustice to be delivered,\u201d and \u201cit\u2019s the right thing to do.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungytg500053b6h4jzm548z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI don\u2019t want to die,\u201d Dearman told CNN in a phone interview Friday from a prison in Atmore, Alabama. \u201cBut I feel it in my heart that this is the only option that would help the victims\u2019 families get the closure they need to move forward.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluroali60002356i5e81uxue@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI made peace with my decision.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clutubxmc00033b6ikezw9224@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the early morning hours on August 20, 2016, Dearman broke into a home in small-town Citronelle, Alabama, according to a sentencing order filed in the case. He made his way through the house, attacking five of the occupants one by one, using an ax, a .45 pistol and a shotgun.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluofkqf9000g356ij3cl5lbx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shannon Melissa Randall, Robert Lee Brown, Justin Kaleb Reed, Joseph Adam Turner and Chelsea Marie Reed, who was five months pregnant, were left dead. Dearman fled the scene, taking his\u00a0sometime girlfriend and the infant son of two victims with him.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungytg500073b6hq0ugfeb3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dearman, who was born in Greene County, Mississippi, later turned himself in to authorities there.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluofqxes000i356iwuf83t52@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He pleaded guilty to capital murder charges on August 31, 2018; a jury recommended the death penalty. Dearman\u2019s parents both testified his \u201clong-term drug abuse was the central problem in their son\u2019s life,\u201d according to his sentencing order.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungytg500083b6h41w4zvf1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dearborn said he tried to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eal the sentence \u2013 but only for the sake of his family, who he said wanted him to fight for his life. \u201cThey have a right as my family, to try to be presented with opportunity to seek relief from the sentence that I was cast, because no father wants their son to die,\u201d he told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluoq17ru0002356iffet0lye@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat they\u2019ve seen was a drug addict, what they\u2019ve seen was a man who literally wasn\u2019t in his own mind, he was in a mental fetal position,\u201d Dearman said. His first appeal was filed in October 2018, and he told his family he\u2019d allow a few years of appeal attempts. In February, the Alabama Supreme Court denied a motion to appeal his sentence, upholding his convictions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clurok9bv0004356i78y7b965@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And now, about 5.5 years after his sentence, Dearman says the fight is over.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungytg5000b3b6hvt4a1zv6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s just time to do what I know is right and what I know I gotta do,\u201d he said. \u201cMy family\u2019s right was secured; now it\u2019s time for the victims and their families to get what\u2019s right to them and what they deserve and that\u2019s for justice to be delivered.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungytg5000c3b6he4e3t01t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On April 4, Dearman said, he fired his attorneys with the Equal Justice Initiative who were representing him during the appeals process. Dearman told CNN he wrote letters to Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey and the state\u2019s attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>, asking them to carry out his death sentence.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clurdgdzl0003356iiniees62@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall\u2019s office received the letter, spokesperson Amanda Priest told CNN. CNN also contacted Angela Setzer, Dearman\u2019s former attorney with the Equal Justice Initiative, for comment but did not receive a response.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungytg5000d3b6ho0kbk5rk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s unknown whether or when Dearborn\u2019s request might be fulfilled.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluogu05o000q356iq04kwqjc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dearman had been at the home on August 17 \u2013 three days before the murders \u2013 helping scrap a metal trailer but his behavior started to make at least one person at the home in Citronelle, about 30 miles north of the Gulf Coast city of Mobile, \u201cuncomfortable,\u201d according to the sentencing order.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluohn8e50002356ivusgr3ug@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shannon Randall, who had a 3-month-old son, ultimately said she didn\u2019t want Dearman staying \u201cin the same home as her infant\u201d but he could still work there.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluoi183k000a356iuz2t27vg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He left and returned to a home he shared with his girlfriend in George County, Mississippi, about 15-minutes over the state line. Court records show he injected methamphetamine that evening and became abusive toward his girlfriend.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluohzy5u0008356i2nrybl3z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The next day, she fled.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluoi51vq000c356io5nm0j39@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dearman returned to the home in Citronelle, hoping to speak to his girlfriend, and was told to leave. He came back three more times that evening, prompting Randall\u2019s husband, Joseph Adam Turner, to call authorities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungz987000i3b6h3r4p1jt0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Police patrolled outside the home but left around 3 a.m.<strong> <\/strong>when there was a shift change, the sentencing document notes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluohxr0m0004356ip9mg2in7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sometime in the early morning hours, Dearman returned a final time on foot. He later told investigators that he had used methamphetamine at some point before he entered the house.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluoiji60000h356iv54te5t7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He broke into the home, woke up his sleeping girlfriend and talked with her outside. Dearman, increasingly frustrated, refused to leave and \u201cdemanded she stay and talk to him,\u201d the sentencing order says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluoihw6s000f356iybjt7w45@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He left the home and returned later with an ax, which he\u2019d pulled from a nearby tree.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluoilnie000l356i6i7wtr6s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dearman made his way through the home, swinging the weapon on multiple sleeping occupants who were staying there. He used it on Turner and Randall, who had been sleeping in bed with their son. Dearman then managed to pry a .45 pistol from one of the victims and shot him. He also used a shotgun in the attack, the sentencing order says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluoj9lqy000r356ikv1ldklo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Court records note \u201cafter the initial attack was completed, the Defendant meticulously shot each victim to ensure death.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluojajto000u356ikh3t54kc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He then left and ordered his girlfriend to go with him, taking the infant with them, the sentencing order says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluohkyrh0000356ibw1wmo7d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The order called the attack \u201cespecially heinous\u201d and \u201catrocious,\u201d noting each victim was conscious for a period of time after being brutally attacked.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungzeez000t3b6h0wwwh3du@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Later that day, Dearman told his father what happened, and his father persuaded him to turn himself in to authorities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cluojcbmn000x356i3ari846g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The reality of the crimes Dearman committed began to settle in once he was behind bars and able to sleep, eat and get the drugs out of his system, he told CNN on Friday. From that point forward, he said he started \u201ctalking to God\u201d and knew his life was the price he had to pay.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungzeez000u3b6hfz7yhfr2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dearman stressed his decision is \u201cnot for my own gain\u201d and said he\u2019s grappled with the idea of reaching out to the families of the victims but says he didn\u2019t want to cause more pain. CNN attempted to reach the families of each of the victims.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungzeez000v3b6hbakt9gbm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFrom my point of view, there\u2019s nothing that I could ever say or do that will make this right. I feel like I personally have a debt for the crimes that I committed,\u201d Dearman told CNN. \u201cThat\u2019s the only way that I could ever show that I\u2019m truly remorseful, that I truly do have a con<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clungzhob000x3b6hj8r2s8qm@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"who-wants-to-look-at-death-and-say-come-here\" data-article-gutter=\"true\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%98Who_wants_to_look_at_death_and_say_%E2%80%9CCome_here%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\n    \u2018Who wants to look at death and say, \u201cCome here\u201d?\u2019<br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungzog7000z3b6hompl42kb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Alabama has faced scrutiny over its executions of death row inmates after multiple failed lethal injections prompted an internal review of the state\u2019s capital punishment system in 2022.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungzw0900113b6hwzyap1zp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gov. Ivey asked the state Department of Corrections to conduct a \u201ctop-to-bottom review of the state\u2019s execution process\u201d after problems with multiple lethal injections came into the national spotlight, CNN previously reported. The state resumed executions last spring after the review was completed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungzw0900123b6h78pmq839@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dearman acknowledged some people might question whether he\u2019s fully competent to make the decision to be executed, saying: \u201cYes, I\u2019m confident I\u2019m in my right mind. If I wasn\u2019t, I wouldn\u2019t be trying to think about the victims\u2019 families and their feelings, my family and their feelings. I wouldn\u2019t be trying to think about how people might view the death penalty.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungzw0a00133b6hvweg4i0l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Rev. Dr. Jeff Hood, Dearman\u2019s spiritual adviser, told CNN he was skeptical when Dearman first informed him of his decision and said he had \u201cconflicting emotions\u201d about getting involved in his case.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungzw0a00143b6hwjdx23d8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDerrick has consistently expressed this is a spiritual decision for him and not a political decision or an activist decision,\u201d Hood said. \u201cIn our conversations, that\u2019s been an interesting dynamic. This is incredibly spiritual for him.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungzw0a00153b6h73ui2h38@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The convicted killer said he\u2019s against the death penalty \u201cin nine out of 10 cases\u201d and believes it\u2019s widely misused \u2013 but he says it\u2019s warranted in his case.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clungzw0a00163b6h8pvb2kx7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDoes it scare me?
