\n William Shatner took a moment on Real Time<\/em> Friday to reflect on living boldly throughout his acting career.<\/p>\n

\n The Star Trek<\/em> star, who has hundreds of credits to his name, was asked by host Bill Maher if his outgoing personality was shaped by his character Captain\u00a0James T.\u00a0Kirk or if the show thought he was already a \u201cboldly going guy\u201d when he auditioned for the legendary role.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cAs an actor, taking a job \u2026 maybe it\u2019ll be successful, I\u2019ll do the best I can,\u201d Shatner explained. \u201cAnd then invariably the numbers are mostly fails and then every so often something is successful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n He continued, \u201cThe fact that Star Trek<\/em> became a showbiz phenomenon that lasted, what, 60 years? And there\u2019s all these other shows and all these other actors. Who knew? Nobody knew.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n In 1966, Capt. Kirk was Shatner\u2019s breakout role in Hollywood, although the series<\/a> was canceled after just three seasons. But it ended up scoring a cult following in syndication, leading the actor to reprise the beloved role in seven feature films.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n However, the Boston Legal<\/em> alum has previously been open about going broke after the Star Trek<\/em> show was initially canceled by NBC, forcing him to learn to roll with the punches. And following a decades-long career, it\u2019s safe to say he\u2019s learned a thing or two, so also during his conversation with Maher, he shared some wise words with the host about living life to the fullest as the future is unpredictable. <\/p>\n

\n \u201c[You] don\u2019t know anything. You\u2019re gonna step out of the studio after the show, you don\u2019t know that a car isn\u2019t gonna hit you,\u201d Shatner explained, drawing laughter from the audience at the timing of his comments. \u201cOr a bus or some big guy who says you\u2019ve said enough, bang, right on the head. You don\u2019t know the future. The future is unheralded.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Last month, Shatner got candid with The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> about his \u201cgrowing realization that all the plans you have for your life are dependent on the guy driving a car behind you or in front of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n He added at the time, \u201cYou may think you\u2019re like, \u2018I\u2019m going to control. I\u2019m going to choose that motion picture,\u2019 or go onstage choosing elements of your career, thinking you\u2019re making a career move. It has nothing to do with reality at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The other guests featured on the latest episode of Real Time<\/em> were Piers Morgan and Gillian Tett.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
