2024 and beyond? Then, you must create what Google calls \u201chelpful, reliable, people-first content.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In this article, I will outline a process that shows you exactly how to do that and provide a simple template you can fill out to take your content to the next level.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-spambusters-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Spambusters\"><\/span>Spambusters\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At the time of writing, Google is doing some major spring cleaning to tackle some of the spammy, low-quality content <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/search\/google-search-update-march-2024\/\">littering the search results<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1038259\/SEL_Post-text --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1693000027709-0\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"post-break\"><\/div>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, much content is developed from an SEO perspective. Google\u2019s latest update is designed to help push down some of this SEO-first content and surface people-first content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our goal here should be to create well-optimized, people-first content. Any savvy marketer knows you build trust with your prospects by being helpful and sharing.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-people-first-content-process\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_people-first_content_process\"><\/span>A people-first content process<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Google has a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/fundamentals\/creating-helpful-content\">help page<\/a> that provides several questions you can use to review your existing content to ensure it is helpful, reliable and people-first. Unfortunately (and ironically), this page is not helpful when creating new content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition, I have created a simple process we use at my agency for planning, writing and reviewing new content that is people-first and ticks all of Google\u2019s qualitative boxes.<\/p>\n<p>To simplify following the steps, here\u2019s a simple template you can fill out as you work through the article. Grab a copy of this first.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1ma1YGPdKUUlrCSMju28IKfNhdP4DMo539XtBeeyLVsY\/edit?usp=sharing\"><em>People-first content template (Make a copy)<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-people-first-content-a-writing-process\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"People-first_content_A_writing_process\"><\/span>People-first content: A writing process<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>What follows is a six-step process for creating SEO-friendly content that is people first.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As a side note, while Google is at war with low-quality generic content, don\u2019t feel like you can\u2019t use AI tools to help. Just ensure you use these generative AI tools as an SEO assistant rather than create the whole article for you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-1-goals\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_1_Goals\"><\/span>Step 1: Goals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>What is your goal for this content? How does this fit into your overall SEO strategy and SEO planning?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Creating a well-considered goal is essential. The goal is what you are aiming at. If you are off the mark here, you will miss the target despite your efforts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To strengthen goals, follow a simple process called \u201cThe Five Whys.\u201d State your initial goal, then ask \u201cwhy\u201d up to five times until you have strengthened and clearly articulated your goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-example\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Example\"><\/span>Example<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Initial goal:<\/strong> Write a blog post about our eco-friendly kitchen products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why? <\/strong>To improve our website\u2019s ranking on Google.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First analysis: <\/strong>I want to improve our website\u2019s ranking on Google.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why? <\/strong>Because a higher ranking will lead to more organic traffic to our site.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Second analysis:<\/strong> I want more organic traffic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why?<\/strong> Because increased traffic can lead to more customer engagement and brand recognition.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Third analysis: <\/strong>I want increased customer engagement and brand recognition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why? <\/strong>This engagement will likely lead to higher sales and customer loyalty.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fourth analysis: <\/strong>I want higher sales and customer loyalty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why? <\/strong>With increased sales and a loyal customer base, we can further our mission to promote sustainable living and make a larger positive environmental impact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Revised goal: <\/strong>Our objective is to create an informative blog post about eco-friendly kitchen products that educate users about kitchen sustainability. This will help us drive organic traffic to the site, increasing engagement and leads.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-action-item\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Action_item\"><\/span>Action item<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Outline your goals and refine them using The Five Whys technique. Incorporate SMART SEO goals to refine and articulate the objectives.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-2-reframing-for-your-audience\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_2_Reframing_for_your_audience\"><\/span>Step 2: Reframing for your audience<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You know what you want, but Google does not care about your goals, only the satisfaction of its users. You must align your objectives with helping users while connecting them to your business and marketing mission.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, you can employ \u201creframing.\u201d Based on Ann Handley\u2019s book \u201cEverybody Writes,\u201d it\u2019s a tool for shifting perspectives and better serving our audience in marketing.<\/p>\n<p>First, you should be clear on who your audience is. Google spells this out:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cDo you have an existing or intended audience for your business or site that would find the content useful if they came directly to you?\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Take your initial goal and look at this from your audience\u2019s perspective. Ask, \u201cSo what?\u201d and answer with \u201cBecause\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Do this exercise up to five times.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-example-0\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Example-2\"><\/span>Example<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Your goal: <\/strong>Our objective is to create an informative blog post about eco-friendly kitchen products to help generate leads for our sustainable kitchen products.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>So what? <\/strong>We all need to learn how to be sustainable in all areas of our lives to help prevent global warming and ensure the planet\u2019s safety for future generations.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>So what? <\/strong>Learning about sustainability in the kitchen can help you reduce your environmental footprint, lead to healthier living and save money \u2013 good for you and good for your children.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Final goal: <\/strong>The article will provide a detailed look at how choosing eco-friendly kitchen products leads to a healthier lifestyle, cost savings and benefits for the planet. It encourages readers to make sustainable choices in their daily lives and shows them how to do that with our products.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-action-item-0\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Action_item-2\"><\/span>Action item<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Define your audience, query your goal, reframe it from the customer\u2019s perspective and explain how it helps them. Fill it out in the supplied template. Ensure you can succinctly answer how this helps the reader.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- START INLINE FORM --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END INLINE FORM --><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-css-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-3-demonstrate-experience-and-expertise-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_3_Demonstrate_experience_and_expertise\"><\/span>Step 3: Demonstrate experience and expertise\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The content you create should establish the author\u2019s experience and expertise in a verifiable way. Google spells this out for us with the E-E-A-T and, more specifically, the requirement for \u201chelpful, reliable, people-first content.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What makes something reliable? Experience, expertise and credibility are good starting points.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Below are key points to remember based on Google\u2019s documentation:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your content should demonstrate first-hand experience and expertise. You should show a depth of knowledge by using a product or service or visiting a place. From a business perspective, you should clearly illustrate that you have experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expertise\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The content should demonstrate expertise or link to a page that does. For instance, if your business has accreditations, ensure they are visible on the site. If the author has specific expertise, ensure this is detailed on an author page.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get your facts straight<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Using data to illustrate your expertise is helpful, but ensure that any facts you use are 100% correct, referenced and do not contain unsubstantiated claims.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018About us\u2019 and author pages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your site should feature \u201cAbout us\u201d and author pages that expand upon the credibility of the business and the individual authors. Link to these from your content. Google mentions these pages specifically, so give it what it wants.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-action-item-1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Action_item-3\"><\/span>Action item<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In the people-first content template, fill out the four expertise boxes covering experience, expertise, fact-checking and about us and author pages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-4-aim-high\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_4_Aim_high\"><\/span>Step 4: Aim high<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You should aim to create unique content that is different or better than elsewhere. Your overall SEO strategy is important here, as you want a reason to stand out from the crowd, and that should flow through your content marketing.<\/p>\n<p>Google provides us with 12 points to review content quality. However, we can summarize these into six points that you can use to guide your content creation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Data and examples<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Identify data and examples that support your article. Include these, and be sure to cite them correctly. Remember, people love stats and having something makes your content linkable (which is still crucially important).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Add something to the discussion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Look for areas where you can add something new to the discussion, such as new research, reporting or analysis. This does not have to be complicated. Run a short survey, but add something new to the discussion to add value to your article. In a nutshell, don\u2019t just say the same thing as everyone else!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use clear titles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Create clear, de<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ive, accurate and non-sensational titles summarizing the content. You can still optimize but do so sensibly. Always prioritize people over SEO.<\/p>\n<p><strong>State your sources and add commentary\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When referencing other sources, add value. Avoid just rewriting or restating; try to add a unique spin to what is already there. Use your experience and expertise to do so. You are an expert on this topic; your opinion and experience here matter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus on quality and make it easy to share\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ensure the content is well produced. Use AI tools here to help if you wish. Don\u2019t take every recommendation. Keep your voice in the piece. Aim for something of the same quality you expect in a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper or other printed <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-action-item-2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Action_item-4\"><\/span>Action item<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Fill out page four of the template. Don\u2019t worry about finding something for each of these but try to ensure you bring something new.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dig deeper: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Mastering content quality: The ultimate guide<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-5-write-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_5_Write\"><\/span>Step 5: Write\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In some respects, this is the easy bit. Once you have completed the research steps above, you will know the angle from which you are coming. I recommend copying your overall goal at the top of your document so you can use that as your North Star!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The steps you take now will vary depending on your own writing style, but the key here is that planning sets up success.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My approach is something like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Decide on the format (blog post, list, stats, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Outline bullet points of the sections.<\/li>\n<li>Work on a very rough first draft (just write \u2013 don\u2019t stop to edit).<\/li>\n<li>Walk away for a few hours, at least.<\/li>\n<li>Write the second draft.<\/li>\n<li>Walk away and sleep on it.<\/li>\n<li>Review using Google\u2019s question list.<\/li>\n<li>Write the third draft.<\/li>\n<li>Editor review.<\/li>\n<li>Tweak and publish.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I often think the most important aspect here is to sleep on it.
