\n Amid the semiconductor industry\u2019s slowdown<\/a> and increasing geopolitical tensions, Dutch chip machine-maker ASML reported a decrease both in sales and profits.<\/p>\n

Europe\u2019s most valuable tech company saw orders fall to \u20ac3.6bn in the first quarter of 2024, down from \u20ac9.2bn in the previous quarter. Its net profit also dropped to \u20ac1.2bn \u2014 a 37% decrease compared to Q4 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see 2024 as a transition,\u201d ASML\u2019s President and CEO Peter Wennink said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Wennink expects a stronger second half of the year \u201cin line with the industry\u2019s continued recovery from the downturn.\u201d<\/p>\n

Interestingly, China represented ASML\u2019s largest market in Q1 2024, accounting for 49% of the company\u2019s sales. That\u2019s despite ASML\u2019s entanglement in an escalating chip war between the US and China, which has led to export restrictions.<\/p>\n

The latest measures, which came into effect in January, prohibit ASML from selling certain deep ultraviolet lithography (DUV<\/a>) machines (the ones behind the production of less advanced chips) to China.<\/p>\n

ASML expects that the restrictions will impact app<\/a>roximately 15% of sales in China. Sales in the first quarter of this year were down \u20ac300mn<\/a> compared to the previous quarter.<\/p>\n

The Dutch tech giant forecasts global net sales between \u20ac5.7bn and \u20ac6.2bn for the second quarter. It reached \u20ac6.9bn in the same period last year.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
