Winehouse, someone unafraid to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s5Dqa_K6blg\">dismiss<\/a> anything she saw as beneath her, would surely not accept this soft-soap depiction of her rise from jazz singer to international icon. <i>Back To Black<\/i> isn\u2019t really for Amy Winehouse, though. Just like the flawed 2018 Queen biopic <i>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/i> shied away from a full depiction of Freddie Mercury\u2019s sexuality or his hedonistic lifestyle, <i>Back To Black<\/i> is a film with reputation management at the top of its agenda. That fact that the subjects of these films are unable to object seems as though it must be a bonus for the producers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            <i>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/i> is starting to feel like ground zero for a new wave of musical biopics that has already brought <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> on Elton John, Bob Marley, and Elvis Presley. It\u2019s not that these films are all bad. Some, in fact, have a lot to recommend about them. But it\u2019s beginning to feel like the notoriously lazy Hollywood machine has found a new flavor of IP that it likes. Superhero fatigue is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/madame-web-bomb-killed-sony-franchise-1235829471\/\">very real<\/a>, but it <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears the hunger for films about musicians is growing. <i>Bob Marley: One Love<\/i> (43% on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/bob_marley_one_love\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>) is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/hughmcintyre\/2024\/03\/04\/bob-marleys-movie-is-quickly-becoming-one-of-the-most-successful-musical-biopics-ever\/\">on course<\/a> to make over $200 million at the box office and <i>Back To Black<\/i> may well follow suit. Maybe those don\u2019t grab your attention but chances are you\u2019ll be interested in at least one of the upcoming movies about <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/04\/bruce-springsteen-movie-jeremy-allen-white-20th-century-1235876983\/\">Bruce Springsteen<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/news\/martin-scorsese-frank-sinatra-biopic-dicaprio-jennifer-lawrence-1235973769\/\">Frank Sinatra<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/timothee-chalamet-sings-as-young-bob-dylan-biopic-1235006052\/\">Bob Dylan<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/02\/michael-jackson-biopic-michael-jaafar-jackson-first-image-1235824152\/\">Michael Jackson<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/billy-joel-biopic-piano-man-jaigantic-1235199055\/\">Billy Joel<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2021\/04\/boy-george-movie-biopic-karma-chameleon-keanu-reeves-danny-mays-1234740115\/\">Boy George<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/selena-gomez-to-play-linda-ronstadt-in-upcoming-biopic-8424925\">Linda Ronstadt<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/daisy-edgar-jones-carole-king-beautiful-movie-1235444331\/\">Carole King<\/a>, or the Beatles (that\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thebeatles.com\/sam-mendes-neal-street-productions-make-landmark-beatles-biopic-project-sony-pictures-entertainment\">four movies<\/a>, one for each member).<\/p>\n<p>            It\u2019s not a stretch to imagine studio executives rolling out their slate of biopics in the way Marvel once confidently announced 10 years worth of titles at Comic-con (\u201cComing in 2030, Harry Styles in <i>Jagger!<\/i>\u201d). But before we sprint towards another decade of cheap green screen and bad wigs, it\u2019s worth stopping and asking what is behind this trend and what precisely we want from the wave of upcoming titles. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261270\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bob Marley: One Love - Official Trailer (2024 Movie)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ajw425Kuvtw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261271\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Money being at the heart of commercial decision making is neither revelatory nor necessarily evil. The biopic trend does feel inherently conservative, though, when paired with what is happening in the music industry. The past decade of streaming has placed increased importance on labels back catalogs. Greatest Hits albums dominate the charts and one well-placed <i>Stranger Things<\/i> sync can send a song like Kate Bush\u2019s \u201cRunning Up That Hill\u201d stratospheric. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Moments like that are hard to manufacture. Not everyone can <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OtzVKUCZE5w\">drink cranberry juice while listening to Fleetwood Mac<\/a> and introduce \u201cDreams\u201d to a whole new audience. A Fleetwood Mac movie is much easier to wish into existence, though. A company like Hipgnosis, who <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2021\/aug\/09\/hipgnosis-buys-rights-to-songs-of-fleetwood-macs-christine-mcvie\">bought the rights to Christine McVie\u2019s songs in 2021<\/a>, would certainly be keen to see the drama behind <i>Rumors<\/i> make it to the big screen. In a time when establishing new artists is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/new-music-tiktok-artist-development-suffering\/\">harder than ever<\/a>, it\u2019s worth pushing back against that which further reinforces the status quo. <\/p>\n<p>            The problem in making a biopic with any real grit, ultimately, is access to music rights. Any biopic <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt9694312\/\">without the songs<\/a> made by the artist is going to struggle, yet gaining the rights means going into business with the artist (or estate) whose opinion on the end product is the most subjective. It\u2019s an impossible conundrum and something that feels like an asterisk on the genre as a whole. <\/p>\n<p>            Some degree of independence is vital for a great biopic, as is a subject willing to be shown in an unflattering light should their story require it. <i>24 Hour Party People<\/i> doesn\u2019t paint Manchester music impresario Tony Wilson as a saint, but it captures the energy of the city in the early \u201890s with a real verve. Joaquin Phoenix\u2019s Oscar-nominated depiction of Johnny Cash, meanwhile, is frank about the country singer\u2019s substance abuse and  the corrosive effect it had on his family. Todd Haynes\u2019 excellent 2007 Bob Dylan biopic <i>I\u2019m Not There<\/i> takes things to a more experimental place, casting multiple actors to play him, including Cate Blanchett. Haynes recognizes that what makes an artist unique is their aura, not the details of their Wikipedia page. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            This is what feels so uninspiring about the current moment: audiences are being served up simplified life stories of artists whose narrative is already written in the pop culture landscape. There are people with knotty realities that screenwriters would love to write \u2014 think John Lennon or the late Winehouse \u2014 but the chances of seeing those unflattering moments make it onto the screen feel limited when a smoothed-out version is beneficial to the bottom line numbers and egos involved. <\/p>\n<p>            The route to this point hasn\u2019t come out of nowhere. Looking back over the music documentaries of the past decade is to see a redefinition of the vanity project.. Does a big tent pop album even exist if it doesn\u2019t come with a doc executive produced by the artist? Ask Beyonce, Taylor Swift, or Billie Eilish. This desire to shape one&#8217;s own narrative extends out to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>, which has replaced traditional media when it comes to communicating a narrative and speaking directly to fans. It was perhaps inevitable that biopics would follow suit. <\/p>\n<p>            If the wave of modern music documentaries greased the wheels for this current blockbuster moment, the previous decade could offer a way forward. Films such as <i>Searching For Sugarman<\/i> and <i>20 Feet From Stardom<\/i> focused on artists who never got their moment in the spotlight. <i>Sugarman<\/i> looks at how the little known songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, a contemporary of Dylan and Leonard Cohen before slipping between the cracks, became the sound of the ant-apartheid movement in South Africa. <i>20 Feet From Stardom<\/i>, meanwhile, turns the camera onto the backing singers whose job is to be heard and not seen. These stories show that music is not just about the headliners and that the richest stories are often the ones that viewers don\u2019t know about prior to entering the theater. Yes, it would undeniably be harder to sell the story of a cult figure than that of a generational idol but Hollywood turned <i>Antman<\/i> into a major franchise. They have proof that they can take figures from the fringe of a universe and convince people of their importance.
