target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mschf.xyz\/\">MSCHF<\/a> sent \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2018\/08\/justin-bieber-hailey-baldwin-hillsong-evangelicals-hollywood.html\">cool pastors<\/a>\u201d and holier-than-thou hypebeasts into a frenzy by releasing a pair of white Nike Air Max 97s with a crucifix pendant and Holy Water in the soles. Dubbed the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jesus.shoes\/\">Jesus Shoe<\/a>, it was a viral sensation that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/mortgages\/average-rent-by-state\/#:~:text=The%20average%20national%20rent%20price,market%20data%20from%20Apartment%20List.\">cost more than what most Americans pay for a month\u2019s rent<\/a> and sold out in less than a minute. In the mainstream market, the shoe acted as a symbol of status and sanctity during a brief moment when celebrities were flocking to Hillsong Church to see <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/19\/us\/hillsong-pastor-carl-lentz.html\">disgraced former pastor<\/a>, Carl Lentz, and Kanye West\u2019s Sunday Service, dressed head-to-toe in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ssense.com\/en-us\/editorial\/fashion\/wrath-of-nature-fear-of-god-2\">Fear of God\u2019<\/a>s faith-based streetwear. As TikTok hashtags like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.highsnobiety.com\/p\/christian-core\/\">#ChristianCore<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/discover\/nuncore\">#NunCore<\/a> show, it\u2019s a winking mockery of sacred Church symbolism, which, depending on the context, can be interpreted as critiques of the Church as a Western institution that deeply influences American culture and politics. <\/p>\n<p>            After decades of metalheads, goths, and punks wearing inverted crosses as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/scholarworks.sjsu.edu\/etd_theses\/5368\/\">a form of sartorial intimidation<\/a>, mass consumption means you can order <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dollskill.com\/products\/highway-havoc-moto-jacket?variant=44199327170817&amp;tw_source=google&amp;tw_adid=&amp;tw_campaign=20928056595&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjww_iwBhApEiwAuG6ccFaUrliUoyj2iFrqqwj18syvHVZiOdbJ6E2f3qbz856dfjDilmMnVxoCwmAQAvD_BwE\">a pleather pentacle jacket for $130<\/a> (free shipping included). So while the collective expected their customer base to \u201conly be people who bought the shoe ironically\u2026 or liked the joke we made about the Church being a brand,\u201d per Wiesner, there also ended up being \u201cthis other audience of people who are like, \u2018Hell yeah, I love Jesus.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cBut that\u2019s the thing about satire, right? For the release of the pop star\u2019s controversial music video for \u201cMONTERO (Call Me By Your Name),\u201d MSCHF decided to alter another Nike Air Max 97 called the Satan Shoe. This time, it was black with a bronze pentacle and a sole that contained a drop of blood mixed with red ink \u2014 overtly campy and playful in its symbolism and imagery. An onslaught of public condemnation and a lawsuit from Nike ensued, despite Wiesner pointing out that the Jesus Shoe \u201cshould have been considered way more offensive.\u201d <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261228\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Worshiping the Jesus sneakers makes a mockery of the New Testament; clout, materialism, and consumerism aren\u2019t exactly aligned with Christianity\u2019s outward emphasis on humility, false idols, and kindness. Like Wiesner, he agrees that the Jesus Shoe contains a far more scathing critique about egoic individuals fighting over an \u201cobject that was bought and sold by religious noise\u201d to project not faith, but status. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cCapitalism doesn&#8217;t care about the subject matter or the cultural context,\u201d Bentel says, before bringing up Pier Paolo Pasolini\u2019s <i><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/letterboxd.com\/film\/la-ricotta\/\">La Ricotta<\/a><\/i>, a Passion-inspired short from 1963 that almost led to the Italian director\u2019s imprisonment for religious contempt. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cThen he makes [<i><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0058715\/reviews\/\">The Gospel According to St. Matthew<\/a><\/i>] right after, which the Vatican loves,\u201d Bentel rolls his eyes. Christ,\u201d Sabrina Carpenter&#8217;s punny &#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.highsnobiety.com\/p\/slogan-tshirt-trend-2024\/\">Jesus Was a Carpenter<\/a>&#8221; Coachella shirt, or Sydney Sweeney\u2019s buzzy new film, <i><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/review-the-first-omen-is-actually-a-good-omen-movie.html\">Immaculate<\/a><\/i>, with its overt critique of religious institutions attacking women\u2019s bodily autonomy.
