\n Today \u2014 on Earth Day \u2014 non-profit search engine Ecosia has launched the \u201cgreenest browser on Earth\u201d as it seeks to offer customers a more sustainable alternative to Google Chrome or App<\/a>le\u2019s Safari.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Just like Ecosia\u2019s search engine, the more you use the browser, the more trees you will help plant. The Berlin-based company says it has already planted 200 million trees since 2009.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The new browser will be powered by renewable energy from Ecosia\u2019s own solar farms.\u00a0 In fact, the company says the browser will actually generate green energy \u2014 25Wh per user each day they browse. That\u2019s enough to power a lightbulb for 3 hours. This may not seem like much,, but it\u2019ll add up if Ecosia\u2019s 20 million existing search engine customers start using the browser too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ecosia\u2019s browser has been optimised for speed. It claims that loading pages is up to three times faster than most mainstream browsers. This is thanks <\/span>to an inbuilt ad-blocker that reduces user data and energy consumption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Michael Metcalf, Ecosia\u2019s chief product officer, told TNW\u00a0 that the company wanted to create a browser that wasn\u2019t only more sustainable, but also competitive.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEcosia is in building mode, and we\u2019re confident our product has never been stronger when it comes to user experience,\u201d Metcalf said.<\/span><\/p>\n

As of March 2024, Google Chrome and Safari had 65% and 19% of <\/span>browser market share<\/span><\/a> respectively. Microsoft Edge comes in third place with 5%, while Firefox \u2014 which in 2011, <\/span>took 30%<\/span><\/a> of the browser market \u2014 now only has 2.8%.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the dominance of Chrome and Safari, changing consumers\u2019 browsing habits is no easy feat. However, the EU\u2019s recent <\/span>Digital Markets Act<\/span>, which in March, may help level the playing field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe welcome recent moves like the DMA,\u201d said Ecosia CEO and founder Christian Kroll. \u201cOur browser is also another way for them to become more independent from big tech.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to seeing how it\u2019s received as we continue to broaden our climate commitments across reforestation, green investments, and advocacy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Built on Google\u2019s open-source platform Chromium, the browser will be familiar to anyone who already uses Chrome. This includes customisable browsing and security features like password management and SSL encryption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Users will have access to Ecosia\u2019s existing features, such as its green leaf icon,<\/span> climate pledge rating, and <\/span>newly launched AI Chat<\/span>, powered by OpenAI. The chatbot generates \u201cgreener answers,\u201d directing users to sustainable solutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The browser also contains a \u201csponsored links\u201d feature, where users can shop online, while supporting Ecosia\u2019s climate action projects at no extra cost. This will create a new revenue stream for the company which previously made all of its money via ad revenue.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ecosia claims all of its profits go directly to tree-planting projects across the world. And now, with the new browser, to clean energy generation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2018, Ecosia gave away its shares to the <\/span>Purpose Foundation<\/span><\/a>, to assure that it can never be sold and that no one, including the founder, can profit or receive dividends from the company.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ecosia browser is now available for desktop on Mac and Windows via a<\/span> download page<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> and for mobile via Android and iOS app stores.<\/span>\n <\/div>\n
