Raghavan painted a fairly bleak outlook of Google \u2013 essentially saying that the \u201cgood old days\u201d are long gone:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1038259\/SEL_Post-text --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1693000027709-0\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"post-break\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI think we can agree that things are not like they were 15-20 years ago, things have changed.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s not like life is going to be hunky-dory, forever.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat that means is our growth in this new operating reality has to be hard earned.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Challenges.<\/strong> Google is under attack on many fronts. Some of those Raghavan highlighted:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>More competition: <\/strong>Raghavan didn\u2019t name any specific competitors, but OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta and many other companies are all competing hard with Google to win the AI arms race. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Costs:<\/strong> Google is \u201cspending a ton more on machines\u201d due to generative AI.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slowing growth:<\/strong> The number of new devices coming into the world \u201cis not what it used to be.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regulation:<\/strong> Google is \u201cnavigating a regulatory environment unlike anything we\u2019ve seen before,\u201d such as the European Union\u2019s Digital Markets Act.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Internal bureaucracy:<\/strong> \u201cThe number of agreements and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>rovals it takes to bring a good idea to market \u2014 that\u2019s not the Google way. That\u2019s not the way we should be functioning.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Go faster.<\/strong> Raghavan told his team to \u201cmeet this moment\u201d and \u201cact with urgency,\u201d adding:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIt won\u2019t be easy. But these are the moments and the history of industries that will define us.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf there\u2019s a clear and present market reality, we need to twitch faster, like the athletes twitch faster.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThere is something to be learned from that faster-twitch, shorter wavelength execution.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Twitch, or twitchiness, refers to an athlete\u2019s ability to quickly or explosively move their body in different directions during high-intensity or physical sports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong> Google Search has received much criticism in recent years \u2013 with a great deal of it coming under Raghavan\u2019s leadership. Many believe we are seeing the inevitable enshittification of Google, where Google puts profit above everything, including its users. Fittingly, Raghavan referred to Google\u2019s advertising business as \u201cthe envy of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Velocity and focus.<\/strong> In response to the leaked audio of the all-hands meeting, a Google spokesperson told CNBC: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWith a huge opportunity ahead, we\u2019re moving with velocity and focus. \u2026  There\u2019s lots more to come.\u201d (The spokesperson also mentioned the addition of generative AI to search and search quality improvements.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About Raghavan.<\/strong>  He is a senior vice president at Google, responsible for Google Search, Ads and many other Google products. Raghavan was promoted to his position in June 2020. Prior to joining Google, he was at Yahoo from 2005 to 2012, a period during which Google ascended and Yahoo declined rapidly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is an article making the rounds today, mainly about Raghavan, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wheresyoured.at\/the-men-who-killed-google\/\">The Man Who Killed Google Search<\/a>. The article makes several fair points but also tries to paint Raghavan as the sole villain responsible for the downfall of Yahoo Search and now Google Search.
