\n Lady Antebellum says it needs that name no more.<\/p>\n

The country-pop trio \u2014 which won Record and Song of the Year Grammys for the 2009 smash \u201cNeed You Now\u201d \u2014 have renounced the name that fans have known since Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood and Hillary Scott joined forces in 2006.<\/p>\n

The trio broke down on Twitter<\/a> just why \u2014 in the wake of George Floyd\u2019s death in police custody and the Black Lives Matter movement that has intensified in its wake \u2014 it is changing its name.<\/p>\n

As of Wednesday, call them Lady A.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a band, we have strived for our music to be a refuge \u2026 inclusive of all,\u201d the tweet reads. \u201cWe\u2019ve watched and listened more than ever these last few weeks, and our hearts have been stirred with conviction, our eyes opened wide to the injustices, inequality and biases black women and men have always faced and continue to face everyday [sic]\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we set out together almost 14 years ago, we named our band after the Southern \u2018Antebellum\u2019 style where we took our first photos \u2026 But we are regretful and embarrassed to say that we did not take into account the associations that weigh down this word referring to the period of history before the Civil War, which includes slavery. We are deeply sorry for the hurt this has caused.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lady A, sounds like we need you more than ever.<\/p>\n

Fan reactions arrived fast and passionate on Twitter, as one follower launched the comments section with, \u201cThank you for this!\u201d and a heart emoji.<\/p>\n

Subsequent tweets ran the gamut. One commenter declared, \u201c@Redskins <\/span>literally look how easy it is\u201d in reference to the ongoing debate over the Washington football team\u2019s much-criticized moniker. Another griped, \u201c\u2009\u2019Why haven\u2019t you changed before now?\u2019 \u2018We have no excuse.\u2019 This is how you grow people. Stop being defensive and grow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A more forgiving Twitter user weighed in with, \u201cI am so incredibly glad this was finally acknowledged. So much needs to change still, and especially within the country music community, but if this isn\u2019t a pretty great step forward. Hope you continue to stand up! Good for you!\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
