Ron DeSantis (R) sent a letter Friday outlining his opposition to the Biden administration\u2019s move to incorporate Air National Guard service members into the Space Force.<\/p>\n<p>The Defense Department submitted a legislative proposal to the Senate Armed Services Committee in late March that would require Congress to override existing law requiring governors to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>rove changes to National Guard units in order to shift hundreds of service members to the Space Force.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Earlier this week, 48 governors of states, territories and commonwealths <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/governor.iowa.gov\/media\/300\/download?inline=&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\">wrote a letter<\/a> addressed to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to oppose the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, DeSantis was not among the signatories of that letter, sent from the National Governors Association, but said in his own letter to the chairs and ranking members of the Senate and House Armed Services committees on Friday that the proposal would \u201cflout more than a century of precedent and undermine federal law protections for state control of their National Guard forces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Florida governor said the current code is a \u201cgood-sense statutory requirement\u201d that ensures National Guard members are working for domestic crisis response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a low-lying, storm-prone state, Florida is uniquely vulnerable to hurricanes and flooding that require significant, operationally ready logistics and disaster support, including from our National Guard units,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis argued that Florida\u2019s National Guard should be larger than it currently is, but the federal government has \u201cunder-resourced\u201d the state in comparison to other large states.<\/p>\n<p>According to his letter, the state of Florida has established the Florida State Guard to supplement the state\u2019s National Guard in times of need.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Space Force has major operations in Florida at Patrick Space Force Base.
