{"id":619469,"date":"2024-05-06T05:36:07","date_gmt":"2024-05-06T02:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/jeffries-democrats-effectively-in-majority-due-to-gop-chaos-dysfunction\/"},"modified":"2024-05-06T05:36:07","modified_gmt":"2024-05-06T02:36:07","slug":"jeffries-democrats-effectively-in-majority-due-to-gop-chaos-dysfunction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/jeffries-democrats-effectively-in-majority-due-to-gop-chaos-dysfunction\/","title":{"rendered":"#Jeffries: Democrats \u2018effectively\u2019 in majority due to GOP \u2018chaos, dysfunction\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/Congress-Speaker-and-Jeffries_022824_AP_Alex-Brandon.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said \u201cchaos\u201d and \u201cdysfunction\u201d in the House GOP has \u201ceffectively\u201d given Democrats the majority, lending credence to far-right criticism of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) as the GOP majority slims.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries said Sunday in a CBS \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview with Norah O\u2019Donnell that Democrats hold outright influence over the House because of how fractured the GOP majority is.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cEven though we\u2019re in the minority, we effectively have been governing as if we were in the majority because we continue to provide a majority of the votes necessary to get things done,\u201d Jeffries said. \u201cThose are just the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a difficult situation on the other side of the aisle, because many of my Republican colleagues are more interested in creating chaos, dysfunction, and extremism,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican majority in the House stands at just five seats, with all in attendance, meaning Johnson has no room for error on controversial bills to ensure passage without working with Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson also faces an ouster threat from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who has blasted the Speaker for working with Democrats and creating a \u201cuniparty.\u201d Jeffries and Democrats have said they will protect Johnson against Greene\u2019s motion to vacate.<\/p>\n<p>He said that Johnson has not asked him for help, but that backing the Speaker is what needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur view would traditionally be, \u2018Let the other side work its own mess out,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cBut when that mess starts to impact the ability to do the job on behalf of the American people, then the responsible thing at that moment might be for us to make clear that we will not allow the extremists to throw the Congress and the country into chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Greene is expected to make her motion to vacate privileged this week, potentially setting up a vote. Two other GOP lawmakers have backed her effort.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries has already used Democrats\u2019 influence to pass some bipartisan priorities in the House. Congress passed a $95 billion foreign aid package last week after weeks of negotiations with hard-line Republicans who resisted the effort.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unable to make a deal with his own party, Johnson voted with Democrats to advance the bill.
