The British <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach is very simple \u2014 looking to ensure AI companies fit into existing laws governing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> companies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, the EU approach, as <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitecase.com\/insight-alert\/dawn-eus-ai-act-political-agreement-reached-worlds-first-comprehensive-horizontal-ai#:~:text=Risk%2Dbased%20Approach%20to%20AI,)%20minimal%2Fno%2Drisk.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White &amp; Case analysis describes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is an entirely new piece of legislation, and is risk-based \u2014 looking to counter the most serious risks that come with developing more advanced AI. Whether that is data scraping, infringements on individual liberty, as well as fake <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> and election involvement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will be other opportunities to do this, for example with future funding programmes, but there is little to highlight an EU push for the advancement of AI and its positive use cases. In fact, former MEP Marietje Schaake is <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/242c8f5a-43af-43d5-875f-261a0841045a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already calling for an AI tax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on the perceived risk of future job losses and economic disruption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Safeguarding_AI_innovation_along_with_democracy\"><\/span>Safeguarding AI innovation along with democracy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a year when most of the world\u2019s democracies have a major election \u2014 including the US, likely the UK, France, Germany, and India \u2014 it\u2019s critical that we ensure AI doesn\u2019t have the type of negative impact that bots and fake news had on elections in 2016.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper latest channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/events.tnw\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"\/><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/events.tnw\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\">\n<p class=\"channel-cta-title\">The &lt;3 of EU tech<\/p>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">The latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol&#8217; founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, it\u2019s also critical that we have a meaningful discussion about how we can harness AI for good \u2014 namely, to help speed up our response to the climate crisis. At World Fund, we\u2019re particularly excited about AI\u2019s climate applications, and have already made two investments in the space and another we will soon disclose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why? Well, for the most part, solving the climate crisis will come from significant investments in deeptech, hardware, and fundamentally new technologies. This is why we\u2019ve been busy raising a larger first-time fund, with the ability to back deeptech and hardware startups like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IQM<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, next-gen battery-recycling company cylib, and many more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"From_deeptech_to_software_stacks\"><\/span>From deeptech to software stacks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, software will also play a role in solving the climate crisis, quickly and potentially cheaply. AI can fundamentally make quick changes to how we use energy resources across industry, highlighting inefficient use and quickly \u2014 without human input. That\u2019s why we invested in Cologne-based aedifion, which helps the built sector reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across biotech and biochemical industries, AI can accelerate research into <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cell-free alternatives<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to fossil fuels. In biodiversity terms, AI will also help us better understand wildfire trends \u2014 and help us protect the natural world through enhanced weather modelling. It can also help us understand and reduce waste in our supermarkets by more effectively understanding consumer buying trends \u2014 that\u2019s why we invested in<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Berlin-based Freshflow<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a political level, we\u2019d like to see some understanding that there can and should be a positive correlation between the development of AI and adopting some of its use cases in our response to the climate crisis. The risk-based approach, which the EU is currently spearheading, needs softening in due course so we can start this more positive discussion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will come in the form of initial public debate, then parliamentary debate, regulatory amendments to the broader AI bills being debated at present, and later down the line, the building of AI into climate policy \u2014 and with it, climate investment packages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This should \u2014 hopefully \u2014 lead to meaningful AI that helps us optimise existing industrial and economic structures, so they have a drastically reduced climate impact.
