Price increase May 17.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>CopyCop is not the first influence network to harness LLMs, but its tactics provide an ominous warning of what\u2019s to come.<\/p>\n<p>Cl\u00e9ment Briens, an analyst at Recorded Future, told TNW that the operation\u2019s scale was particularly striking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy exploiting the capabilities of large language models, they have achieved unprecedented reach and effectiveness in their efforts to shape public perception,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"LLMs_prepare_for_battle\"><\/span>LLMs prepare for battle<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Recorded Future first discovered the operation after finding copies of LLMs interfaces on fake news sites.<\/p>\n<p>One <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/jk2el\">story<\/a>\u00a0that stoked fears about outdated NATO weapons contained a curious note at the end: \u201cThis translation has been done in a conservative tone, as requested by the user.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/jk2el#selection-1569.105-1569.286\">article<\/a>\u00a0featured a similarly unusual final paragraph:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original text provided certain instructions regarding the tone and context of the translation. However, as an<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI<\/span><\/span>\u00a0language model, I am committed to providing objective and unbiased translations. I have omitted the requested cynical tone and biased context from the translation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recorded Future also identified<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> specific LLM prompts used by CopyCop operators. When covering the US government, big corporations, and NATO, the LLMs were directed to adopt a cynical tone, Recorded Future said.<\/p>\n<p>On other subjects, the prompts elicited positive depictions. Notable examples included Russia, Donald Trump, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recorded Future suspects that CopyCop is allied with the Kremlin. The analysts also believe<\/span>\u00a0the network used <span>OpenAI tech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harnessing these LLMs enabled CopyCop to disseminate content prolifically. As of March 2024, over 19,000 uploaded articles had been uploaded. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>This striking scale highlights the power LLMs possess for information warfare.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_AI_information_war\"><\/span>The AI information war<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analysts have spotted several other influence operations that used LLMs. Record Futures <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.recordedfuture.com\/russian-influence-network-doppelgangers-ai-content-tactics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously identified<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> them in a campaign by Doppelg\u00e4nger, another Russian influence operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has also shared evidence of the tactics. In a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/security\/blog\/2024\/02\/14\/staying-ahead-of-threat-actors-in-the-age-of-ai\/\">January blogpost<\/a>, the company warned that threat actors linked to Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran had t<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed LLMs for reconnaissance, propaganda generation, and social engineering.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft worked with OpenAI to detect and disrupt the operations. The techniques were \u201cearly-stage\u201d and neither \u201cparticularly novel or unique,\u201d the tech giant said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presumably, those descriptions wouldn\u2019t apply to the LLMs for information operations<span style=\"color: #030303;\"> <\/span>that Microsoft <em>produces<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"AI_vs_AI\"><\/span>AI vs AI<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just days ago, Microsoft revealed it\u2019s built<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an AI model for US intelligence agencies that\u2019s entirely separate from the internet. <\/span><span>Spies can use the system to analyse secret information, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-05-07\/microsoft-creates-top-secret-generative-ai-service-for-us-spies\"><span>Bloomberg reports<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to one Microsoft executive, the deployment is the first major\u00a0large language model to operate while fully divorced from the internet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The launch came a year after the CIA <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-09-26\/cia-builds-its-own-artificial-intelligence-tool-in-rivalry-with-china\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unveiled plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a\u00a0ChatGPT-style tool that applies LLMs to open-source intelligence. Privacy campaigners fear the tech will snoop on the personal data of citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At Recorded Future, another threat is causing concern. <span>In March 2024, the firm <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.recordedfuture.com\/adversarial-intelligence-red-teaming-malicious-use-cases-ai\">predicted<\/a> that LLMs will make it 100x cheaper to produce content for influence operations.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet LLMs can also mitigate propaganda. Tech firms and academics are already tapping the models to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2311.07816#:~:text=The%20advent%20of%20new%20and,exploiting%20these%20models%20in%20controlled\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">detect influence campaigns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As they fortify their virtual shields, attackers are sharpening their digital swords.
