The research team claims to have addressed both challenges.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_new_nano-sized_implant\"><\/span>A new, nano-sized implant<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Vision implants contain electrodes that send signals to the brain to convey visual information \u2014 much like pixels create an image.<\/p>\n<p>By developing microscopic electrodes, the team was able to fit a larger number of them onto a single implant. This, in turn, enables higher brain stimulation and creates a more detailed image for the patient.<\/p>\n<p>The level of detail plays a crucial role here. That\u2019s because the image created with brain signals isn\u2019t as clear as someone with full vision would see it.<\/p>\n<p>The implant also uses a special mix of materials to prevent corrosion. This includes a conducting polymer that converts electrical signals, while acting as a protective coat that covers the metal.<\/p>\n<p>According to the researches this material combination ensures both longevity and functionality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now know it is possible to make electrodes as small as a neuron (nerve cell) and keep this electrode effectively working in the brain over very long time spans,\u201d said Maria Asplund, project leader and co-author of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/adhm.202304169\">study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next step will be to create an implant that can have connections for thousands of electrodes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Preclinical results are promising.
